Schenn joins Kings

The Kings have signed center Brayden Schenn to a one-game amateur tryout agreement. Schenn is at the arena in Vancouver right now and is expected to play for the Kings tonight.

Schenn, coincidentally enough, had been relatively close by, in Victoria, B.C., representing a team of top Canadian junior players in a “Super Series” against Russia. The ATO does not impact Schenn’s amateur status, and it’s possible that he might sign an entry-level contract and stay with the Kings for at least a few more games.

Schenn, the Kings’ first-round pick — No. 5 overall — in this June’s draft, was one of the final cuts in training camp. He struggled a bit upon his immediate return to his junior team — Brandon of the Western Hockey League — but now has 12 goals and 27 assists in 24 games.

Presumably, Schenn will play for the Kings tonight, but it’s not yet known with whom. If Jarret Stoll is out again, it’s probably a safe bet that Schenn will be centering the second line. Each of the top four picks in this year’s draft — John Tavares, Victor Hedman, Matt Duchene and Evander Kane — have already made their NHL debut.

More updates on this soon…

    Good Luck Schenn,
What a great opportunity this kid has tonight. I think it’s a great move by DL to bring him in and see what he can do at the pro level, but I dont expect him to stick around unless he just blows our socks off, which is possible but unlikely.

I’m pretty sure the Kings don’t do this if they don’t intend to play him tonight . . .

That said, I’m now very confused. This is definitely the first time I’ve heard of an amateur tryout contract agreement. If he does get an entry-level, he can’t stay with them the rest of the season (barring injuries and this becomes a “permanent call-up”), can he? I thought once teams decided to send prospects back to juniors, they couldn’t call them up for anything beyond emergency injury replacements?

Should be a fun time to find out what Schenn could possibly do if he plays. Hope he and Brown start clobbering the Sedin twins and crashing into Luongo every chance they get (no penalties, of course).

The real crime is that the game isn’t being locally broadcast.

Of course FSN would have never known when they made their schedule, but it’s unfortunate nonetheless.

could this mean the Kings have lost a little faith in Moller right now? or is Manchester just banged up enough not to offer any players for the moment? Monarchs won last night and center Cory Elkins had a good game. either way im still happy for Schenn!

If Schenn signed an entry level contract and played in less than 10 Kings games, could he be sent back to junior without having this count as year one on his entry level contract? Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.

    AK,

I don’t feel sorry for Moller. The guy is young and plays on the first line in the AHL. Hes getting great experience down there, and hopefully within a year or two, he will bulk up a bit and be ready for the physical play that awaits him in the NHL.

  24. Kevin Y says:

They can do this? Awesome. I’ve never heard of something like this for a prospect. I assume there’s some sort of limit to how many of these types of contracts they can offer a player.

But really, couldn’t they have done it for a game where the Kings are televising? I’ve got Center Ice, so I’ll be able to see it anyway (771), but some people won’t.

Anyway, hopefully Schenn impresses. It’s a one-game tryout contract, so he really only has one chance. If he does well, they might decide to keep him around. Unfortunately, we’re finally suffering the injuries we’re accustomed to with this Kings team. It should be interesting seeing him tonight.

    Mike,

Or unless you have NHL Gamecenter Live :) ..

    Johnny,

I like it, but Richardson is actually a very solid 4th line center, and once Rich Clune starts putting up points in Manchester, he’ll solidify our 4th line. Plus, the 4th line you’ve proposed has absolutely no muscle in it, it’s 3 very weak players.

    Smyth-Kopitar-Williams
    Frolov-Stoll-Brown
    Parse (Purcell)-Handzus-Simmonds
    Clune-Richardson-Ivanans/Harrold

Exhibit 17 o the NHL CBA:

In consideration of the opportunity to play in the NHL, the player agrees to present himself, upon request
of the Club to perform services as a player on [DATE] at [LOCATION]. This agreement shall be valid for a term of one (1) day, and a Club shall only be permitted to enter into such an agreement when under emergency conditions. Under this agreement, the player shall receive no salary, bonus (of any kind) or any other form of compensation.

As far as burning a year of an entry-level SPC, that occurs automatically when the player plays in his tenth game.

After the one-game ATO, he would have to sign an NHL contract in order to continue playing in the NHL. But, as noted, a year of the contract is not “burned” if he is returned to juniors before game 10.

    re: moller

I don’t think his head is spinning. Like the rest of us, he’s probably more worried about Loktionov.

    [Reply]

  32. Paul from Oxnard says:

My guess would be that this is a clear indication of Loktionov’s status. If he were able to play I doubt the Kings bring in Schenn. But Loktionov’s shoulder looked bad last night in the 3rd period.

I have heard of ATO contracts, but they’re not seen very often in the NHL. And I believe if he does end up signing his entry level deal and stays with the Kings he’d be subject to the same rules as any rookie who stays out of camp. If he stays past 8 games (I think it’s 8) he burns a year of his contract. If they send him back he doesn’t.

  37. dMan says:

Schenn’s tryout is not saying anything about Moller. Time is the deciding factor here. For Moller or any other Monarch to get the news, pack his bags, catch a flight (if possible) and make the game is unrealistic. For all we know, travel arrangements couldn’t be made, so let’s not assume this is an indictment about Moller’s play.

The Kings have the weirdest numbers lol, Andrew Campbell wears 81? Mikus wears 84? Why is Trevor Lewis wearing 61 and Loktionov is 48? Even Bernier, when do you ever see a goalie wear 45? Rich Clune sports 56 lol, all around weird numbers

    [Reply]

  41. Paul from Oxnard says:

Loktionov wore #49 last night I believe. And Schenn wore 55 in camp. And I agree that it was probably just easier to get Schenn to Vancouver then one of the Monarchs on Thanksgiving day in the USA.

    happy thanksgiving to all…:)

  43. Quisp says:

Loktionov wore 48 last night, same as he did in camp. Segal wore 49. I believe you’re right that Schenn did wear 55 in camp. But he wears #10 in juniors and of course it rhymes with his name. In general, players who have not made the team get those high numbers out of necessity, since (1) you’ve only got a handful of available numbers under 30 (this year, 4, 10, 13, 19, 21, 22, 25, 27, 29) and (2) in camp there are forty players who won’t be on the team that year. Also, (3) it would be insanely presumptuous for someone who hasn’t made the team yet to lay a claim to a high-profile number like 4, 10, 19, 21. Myself, I like to waste time thinking about which prospects would look good and/or would want to debut in which numbers. Since Schenn wears 10 and (as I said) it rhymes, I like that one. Teubert has worn #2, but that’s taken with the Kings, so I imagine he would want #22 (see, TWO-bert). Loktionov, because of his love of Larionov, I figured he would go for something related to his hero’s #8.

I don’t know if 45 has any meaning for Bernier. More later, I’m burning the cranberries.

Happy Thanksgiving.. Thanks for the info Quisp. Excited to see Schenn play tonight. My favorite number-to-name correlation is Jordan “Tootoo” wearing number “22″ (two-two). Guy’s got a chip on his shoulder, AND a sense of humor.

Haahahahaha Quisp, well done, well done.

I haven’t seen any official word on this signing from the Kings website and I guess we won’t know which jersey number he’s going to wear until then. So I’m guessing Stoll won’t be playing tonight but Scuderi’s in? Does that mean O’Donnell doesn’t play or Randy Jones is a healthy scratch? Hmmm food for thought
