Stoll injured

Jarret Stoll, according to Terry Murray, suffered one of the dreaded “lower-body injuries” during the last five minutes of yesterday’s game. Stoll’s status for Wednesday is not yet known, but given the other injuries, Murray said a call-up from Manchester is probable.

No word on whether Rob Scuderi will be able to practice with the team tomorrow. Much more from practice ASAP…

Anyone have statistics on the number of injuries league wide this year as compared to previous years?

There was some speculation that since the lockout, injuries have been on the rise due to an increase in full speed hits.

I’d like to know if there’s any truth to that.

    Frolov-Loktionov-Brown

    Parse-Handzus-Simmonds

    Purcell-Lewis-Ivannans

He was one of a handful of players actually giving 100% every night.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, almost every team in the league is now being besieged with injuries on a weekly basis and its starting to happen to the more elite players. Looks like its now our turn.

Is it because of the instigator rule so no real policing can happening on the ice?

Is it because players are faster and bigger and eventually this was going to happen?

Is it because of the lack of respect among players? I can’t remember a time where so many players have been taking needless runs at each other. On many plays it almost appears like players are trying to intentionally hurt each other.

As fans we understand and love the physical nature of the game but something has gone seriously wrong.

The Stoll injury is a sign that Dean needs to get Bernier up here and get rid of Iceberg. He’s got a .954 save percentage, for crying out loud. Platoon Quick and Bernier and let the goaltending carry us for a little while.

  18. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

I don’t see the connection between Stoll’s injury and Bernier’s save percentage. I do agree that Stoll is one of the players that seems to be working hard every game.

    [Reply]

  19. Scaught says:

The connection is they’ve lost two in a row, have looked bad doing it, Stoll going down isn’t going to help when Smyth and Scuderi are out, so shake things up and call up Bernier, see if goaltending can light a spark. Quick has played respectable but needs to be better, Bernier might motivate him and steal us some wins.

You don’t necessarily need goons, but you sure need to bring on the tough and relay it to every team you meet. Lack of respect between players? See above. Faster, bigger players? Policing can keep things on a more even keel. Gretzky wasn’t a big guy but had protectors.

I thought that is the only reason we have Ivanans. Are you telling me that TM and DL see more talent in Raitas other than an Arthur Murray Dance residle every 5 games?

    Rich,

The ice has been a problem of many years is AIG going to try to improve the ice any time soon. The bad ice is tripping a lot of the players and could be part of all the problems with lower body injuries.

Hello everyone, first-time commenter here. I’m a Red Wings fan, but I live in LA, so the team I’m able to follow most is the Kings. Been a really fun team personally for me to watch since Kopitar arrived; there’s something really appealing to me about his being the first Slovenian in the NHL . . .

Matt George: I’m looking for more detailed numbers, but here’s interesting fodder in the meantime. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/287210-rash-of-nhl-injuries-direct-consequence-of-pairity

This article would seem to point in the direction of an increasing trend in the number in injuries league-wide. So far, I’ve found nothing to support or refute the notion.

  27. uvgt2bkdnme says:

    Matt George: Well, this doesn’t help . . .

“NHL statistician Benny Ercolani said Friday the league doesn’t track injury numbers, so it’s hard to definitively say this season is worse than previous ones.”

    http://www.tennessean.com/article/20091107/SPORTS02/911070325/Big-hits-leave-big-holes-on-NHL-rosters

So in order to have your question answered, we’d have to look through every season in question to see who got injured, how severely, for how long . . .

Hope Stoll is not out for long. He is one of the relatively few King forwards I like to see on the ice – great effort, good talent, aggressive, etc. The trade that brought him and Greene here was a masterful stroke by Lombardi.

    eyesk8r,

I like your line combos, your hired. But Lewis is injured, so your gonna have to sub him out for Harry.

Ivanans has no biz skating on the 3rd line. I like him as our “battleship” getting four minutes a night, but is Terry really thinking that he is the best we can do on that line?

Time to poach from Manchester, lets see what these kids can do.

The higher injury rate is league wide and is directly due to the compressed schedule. The last thing we should do is bring up smaller players.

    [Reply]

  36. rjb says:

Jet what about the Swine flu? Is that not considered a part of the compressed schedule? Ivanans is on the team for what reason again? Is he there to watch each and every player we have go down from a hard check against the boards?

    [Reply]

  37. jet says:

rjb — what about the swine flu? I am not sure what that has to do with the Kings. I guess if the one team gets hit, then it will spread through the league pretty quickly. The compressed schedule is due to the Olympic break. There is actually a big difference between 6 games every two weeks and 7 games every two weeks. The body does not have the needed recovery time.
Ivanans is on the team to provide protection to the youngsters. I think we can say OD and RI’s play near the start of the season is the reason for the great start. This is an 85 point team playing at a 100 point pace. You should have seen how aware the Flame D went into the corners when Sims and Ri were on the ice. It was almost funny.

    Simmonds/Handzus/Brown
    Ivanans/Elkins/Richardson
