After the initial disaster, the Kings didn’t play a bad period, but they also didn’t establish much offensive pressure. They did a good job cleaning up two consecutive Calgary power plays, but on their only power-play chance of the period, the Kings couldn’t even establish control of the puck in the first 60 seconds. Shots were 11-8 Calgary.
The sportsnet guys are talking about Fro…and they aren’t impressed. No urgency, holds on to the puck without producing any chances, gets knocked off the puck too easily, etc.

This oughta make the Frolov haters happy…
Living up in Saskatchewan, I’m getting the game on Sportsnet West. During the intermission, these blowhards had this to say about Frolov:
“The puck seems to go to him a lot but nothing seems to happen after that. He seems to be able to get knocked off the puck a little too often for any coach’s liking.”
“Absolutely no urgency in his game whatsoever. They wanna get this guy going, they wanna see some consistency. You take Ryan Smyth off that line, a guy who battles along the boards for loose pucks, and you put this guy in, you’re playing shorthanded.”
They make some good points, but that’s expected when they’re the enemy analyzing the game.
Then they went on to talk about the Kings as a whole playing poorly in an afternoon game:
“I was a little bit surprised with the effort of the LA Kings. This is a pretty good hockey team, guys. And you watch Wayne Simmonds, a guy who is capable of playing some pretty good two-way hockey for the LA Kings, and he gets caught with his head down here. I mean, that’s a pretty basic play coming behind the net, you gotta see Cory Sarich coming towards you.
“And then coming out of his own zone, sauntering through the neutral zone, has his pocket picked. I mean, we talk about Frolov not having any urgency, Wayne Simmonds is a guy you would expect a bit more urgency out of, and he seemed to be floating a little bit in that period. This is what has to change.”
But then they cap it off with some decent words for us:
“You know what, this is still a young hockey team. Terry is sitting behind the bench, there’s a lot more patience in his game right now I think than Brent Sutter’s, because of the age of the team, averaging 24, 25 years old. There’s a lot of great young players wearing black and purple. And the question is, how do you keep them going, how do you keep them motivated.”

And Fro just scored to make it 2-1. We’ll see if the commentators change their tune in the 2nd intermission.

And then: FROLOV SCORES!

Your comment is great, especially about Simmonds.
Count me as a Simmonds pleader, too.
