Drew Doughty feature

I’m getting ready to head out to practice in Atlanta. If you’d like some morning ready, please check out the feature I wrote on Drew Doughty, who had huge ice time last night and has basically achieved veteran status in his second season. Thanks!

No Doughty about it

    19 – Doughty
    22 – Johnson
    21 – Simmonds
    22 – Kopitar
    23 – Quick

    2 forwards
    2 defensemen
    1 goalie

all 23 and under, with hungry prospects in the wings.

are we in business or what?

the Kings are finally ascending to the throne.

    Been looking for a catch-phrase:

You got it. How ’bout, “Bow to the Throne, boys!”

This kid is something else! I was just thinking about all the question marks on this season: can Quick be our #1, will Kopitar keep up his scoring pace, can Simmonds step it up, can the team make the playoffs? There was one question that has never crossed my mind: can Doughty continue his strong play and even improve from last season? I have complete confidence in his game. He is unwavering. He is a rock.

Great read Rich. There’s no telling how good this 19-year-old can get. I’s kinda scary. Doughnuts rocks, and so do you!

    2 things.

1st. I think that DD is playing so great because of his singing ability. No one and I mean NO ONE sings the songs at Staples Center better or LOUDER than Drew.

2nd. Others are taking notice. On TSN they have him penciled in for the #6 defenseman spot for the Olympic team. That’s huge.

The kid’s a freak of nature. Wait until he fills out, gains more confidence in the offensive zone and starts putting guys through the glass in the defensive zone. Throwing hip checks like that at 19 is just not possible.

The icing on the cake will be when he can control the entire game. He’s saving that for next season so not to spoil us.

Before we bow to the throne gentlemen, lets make the playoffs first….Love the direction though. Not Making the playoffs will be unacceptable for DL-TM and most of all the fans. I say that there are no renewals at all if the Kings fail to get to the promise land this season. The 5 year rebuilding plan that has us finishing 29th 28th and 27th is almost as bad as being a Canes fan right now. Lets Go Boys Beat the ATL tomorrow and make a statement.

On a lighter note, remember when Brownie was one of the best players? I sincerely don’t think his play has weakened (other than at the end of last season.) I think the rest of the team has improved that much. One thing I don’t know, though, is how well he’s doing in the locker room as captain–maybe that’s where he’s most helpful.

Good read Rich. Not a single flaw in Doughty’s game (other than the occassional youthful gaffe). I don’t remember a Kings defenseman over the years that has had this high of a ceiling (Blake comes to mind; but I don’t think even Blake had as complete a game as Doughty). I only hope he stay’s a King a long time and doesn’t take the same road as Blake – I’d love to see this kid as a life-time King with multiple Norris Trophy’s and multiple Stanley Cup victories.

Great read richie…i mean that. Hope its ok to call you richie..Drew is going to be a force…i know many are bashing JMFJ…be he too will become a great blue liner. We shouldnt compare the two of them with time and developement. Jack is very young as well. And it takes much longer for d-men to develope as a whole. Drew is a true freak …. I only pray we dont trade away the team as they grow up. Please god….dont let them.

Good point, KFID. I was thinking about that last night…people look at Doughnuts and think JJ is horrible partly because they seem to want to compare the two. I think it’s really harmed people’s perception of JJ.

I like the puns, thanks, keep it up Rich.

Kenneth, if you’re at Staples, watch him sing along pretty much any tune they play during breaks…. it’s fun. Though I shall not comment on the quality of his singing as I’ve only heard it once and I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

The only thing that worries me (taking yesterdays game vs. the ‘Canes as an example) is that one of these days the “extra shot” or the more aggressive hitting will cost us one of our best D Players for more than just one game.
That’s why I missed Ivanans yesterday. Maybe it was coincidence but I felt there was an increased amount of hits overall (especially on Doughty) and knowing our “enforcer” was out just invites other Teams to do just that………

Loved the story of Legace taking a nap during an AHL game recently. Anyway of having him teach the balance of goalies we play the rest of the season? It would be nice if they just took quick cat naps for say 40 -50 seconds a period.

    Go Kings In The ATL

I am sure that the Canes roster

    Legace
    Gleason
    Corvo
    Kostapolis

Are not taken back from their losing streak, remember they were once Kings.

Well written as always Rich. I am amazed at how well Doughnuts game has come together and how strong he is on the puck. As Jim Fox keeps saying, “He is only 19.” I figure it will be in two to three years and when people speak of the Norris Trophy, Doughnuts name will come up as well.

I have to agree whole heartedly with “I’m Just Saying” on the Kings have to make the playoffs. If they are not in the playoffs this year, then there is something terribly wrong with the team. However, right now the team is playing very well. Everyone seems to be contributing on a consistant basis, with some exceptions on a few games. When you look at the standings, I am reminded of a comment I made to a friend of mine, which was simply this. “The first game of the season and every game after that, is a playoff race with so much talent in the NHL.” So, lets sit back and enjoy the ride, and at the end of the ride, hopefully it will be the end of April and playoff time for the Kings.

@I’mJustSaying — I’m pretty sure Legace was caught napping when he was playing for the Blues, and he had a nasty argument with the GM over it, which is why he’s not playing there any more. Think it was a TV interview, and IIRC, he claims to have owned up to screwing it up on both counts.

  28. Crown Royal says:

Doughty has the potential to be the best D-Man in the NHL. I don’t think he’s played great hockey this year. His play tailed off at the end of last season and seemed to carry over into this year. He has played better lately. He is still making too many poor passes in the defensive end and at times his power play performance is too predictible. As he matures he should become a great hockey player which he is not at this point. His development is one of the two or three absolute keys to the Kings future. It will be a pleasure to watch him grow!

Doughty is great, Jones is great, veteran Scuderi is great…Johnson has to step it up a bit

we got an awesome defense line up if they are all playing their A-game continuously

I’m going to come right out and say that watching Doughnuts play last season is what gave me hope that the Kings are turning it around. Even at 19(!) his presence is incredible.
