Was at the game and loved it. Don’t understand why DD was on the the whole time every PP but hay, it worked. Was in lower bowl behind the net we shot at twice. Told the Pens fans next to me to go get the Guppys 4 us. Time 4 bed then back home 2 vegas in the morning. Night all.
[Reply]
The Standing ovation the crowd gave the team during the last minute of the game. Wow, I have not seen that at Staples in a long time. Great stuff.
[Reply]
Lord, that was fun…
[Reply]
Haha, Rich, I know you’re not a Kings fan per se, but I hope this makes up a little bit for the endless pessimism we generally exude. Great great game.
[Reply]
We need Lombardi quotes!
Kings 2 points out of first in the NHL, Monarchs tied for first in the AHL. Can you believe the best is yet to come? So much depth in the AHL still on the rise. This team has the makings of something unstoppable. We need more Lombardi
[Reply]
I think I lost my voice after Kopi’s second goal. Great game! Even though the Pens were missing three of their top guys, a win is a win against those guys. Nice that the Kings scored five on them and ended their road winning streak. It must have been a huge ego boost for the boys!
[Reply]
Also, tonight I noticed that there are red lights installed around the upper level of the arena. When the Kings score a goal, all the red lights go off. When did they install the lights?
[Reply]
Long time listener
First time caller
I am starting to get truly excited. Tonight the Kings gave us something different than what we have seen for years. A dominant games against a dominant team.
The Pens did not lay an egg. We beat them. That Is freaking nice!!!
Some will say “Crosby sucks” or “He’s a whiner” but the bottom line is the Penguins are good this year, even without Malkin and Gonchar; and the Kings kicked their Vajayjay.
For those that are bitching about some of our players lets give them some time. The team is rolling.
[Reply]
It wasn’t the Stanley Cup or anything, but it was a big game for the Kings, and the Kings delivered. We saw what we were waiting for when they went down 2-1, and everyone was thinking the same thing–will they fold?
No. They collected themselves, took an intermission, then thoroughly outplayed them. The season is long, and the Kings haven’t had to deal with too much adversity yet, but as of tonight, I’d say you could reasonably consider the team on the “next level.”
Now someone needs to get in their face and congratulate them, just before warning them that if they don’t show up on any night, even the best teams can lose to the worst teams, so 100% will always be necessary.
[Reply]
This is also the game we needed to see from Quick. He looked like he expected to make the kind of saves he actually made. He didn’t eat that much rubber, but it seems most of the chances were quality chances, and Quick shut the door at the right time.
[Reply]
I can only imagine the satifaction that Dean Lombardi felt tonight. He is a patient, visionary man, who has withstood criticism, pressure, harrassment, scrutiny and has stayed cool (for years) and made great decisions.
I remember at a panel discussion at Hockey Fest, after he had done the deals for Smyth and Scuderi and the fans wanted a “star” player and kept pressuring and pressuring, insisting that he do more, get someone better. His response was “let’s just wait and see how they play. If there is a hole we will fill it.”
And then I read that he took Kopi aside at times and showed him tapes of really competitive players to spark a competive desire in him. He saw the talent but knew how to really activate it. Those little visionary decisions…stress character building, challenge players in ways that are unique for their developement, get the missing components, wait patiently for the right move, and manage the fan base to keep their support. Those are paying off big time.
His ability to see the big picture is very impressive.
Congratulations to the players and entire organization for building a great team.
[Reply]
Been waiting for this for a long long time. True Pit was short handed, but we took care of business. I thought Quick had his best night stopping some extremely high quality shots.
I want to see Quick develope a “you aren’t gonna beat me” kind of attitude on and off the ice. He’s a bit young for that still, but I hope it comes sooner than later.
[Reply]
The key was that the Kings dominated the game physically. They were bigger and faster. They pushed the Pens around all night. They held Crosby to 1 shot for the whole game.
If this is what Kings fans have to look forward to, it’s going to be a lot of fun watching the Kings for the next few years.
[Reply]
by the way, how big was our work on faceoffs?… just read the official game summary and it looked like Stolly was 10/12 (83%!) on the draw
[Reply]
Gee thanks guys….My son and I are sitting on the couch at 1:00am screaming…woke the old lady up..now she’s pissed…too freakin bad!
What a game the boys played last night. A complete team effort to beat the class of the NHL.
I’m starting to run out of adjectives to describe Kopi’s play. He was matched with Crosby most of the night and completely dominated him in every facet of the game. Williams and Smythe were terrific.
Stoll/Brown/Parse had possibly the best shift of the year on the delayed penalty. What passing! They showed incredible vision and determination.
Fro showed you in the 3rd period what makes him so special. He did absolutely nothing for the first 40 min but dominated like he hasn’t done all year in the 3rd. If only he can do that every night, every shift..he’s an amazing talent..and enigma. Loved the hustle all night from Simmer.
Scuds and DD were flawless on D. Another soplid effort from Drewiskie.
Quick looked like the Quick of last season. He gave up the soft early goal, but showed the resiliency that all made us think he could be “the guy”. The 2 saves he made in the 1st and 2nd periods were game savers. He seems to have that attitude back again.
I am so proud of the job the team and the entire organization have done. This is a special team that the sky’s the limit.
Now don’t blow it over the weekend with a clunker.
[Reply]
One major bitch I have
How the heck do you not have a game on TV at home? That’s a friggin disgrace.
The Islanders suck but every one of their games..home/away is on TV..same with the Devils/Rangers/Knicks/Nets/Yankees/Mets..I couldn’t even try to venture a guess the last time a local game here wasn’t on TV..it’s been decades.
I guess we’re a little spoiled here in NY..or you folks in LA are getting totally screwed!
[Reply]
(I posted one other spot as I wanted to post here)
I was at the game last night and I have to say that Kopitar has made the L E A P.
He has gone from a good second line center to a superstar. All his potential is realized. There was a moment in the 3rd period, with the Kings up 3-2, where Kopi gained speed through the neutral zone, sped by a defender and the crowd just leapt to their feet! He hadn’t even entered scoring territory but we all knew something exciting was about to happen: I had only seen this once before as a King fan — when Gretz arrived.
Kopitar is able to finish now and the danger he presents for defenses, like that guy in Washington, creates so much space for his line mates.
I wish we had a sharper winger than Williams because he needs to bury more shots; I can’t imagine what Marleau would do on his line (Yes, I would make the Fro trade) and except for a shaky first goal, Quick was huge. (I’d still bring Bernier up to push him.)
All that aside, we now have a bonafide star — it took three years and one great offseason of conditioning and dedication, but Kopitar has arrived and, with him, I think is a 4 or 5 seed.
[Reply]
Great, great game. My throat is sore, but that was as fun a game as I’ve been to in awhile. Last years overtime winner against Dallas was fun, but this was the champs and we absolutely punched them in the mouth. What a fun game. I was getting coffee when I hear the big round of boos, now I find out it was the Navy guy waving his Pens flag. Since he’s a squid, he probably used it to dry his tears for his team losing. Is there anyway you (Rich) can find out what Zeus said or did to get an unsportsmanlike though? Seems really out of character for him to get that penalty. Great, great game. Go Kings.
[Reply]
anyone have a stat on the kings goals and shots for and against for the third period this year? it seems we are manhandling the competition in the final 20
[Reply]
Dave
Zeus got the penalty because he shot the puck in the net after the whistle.
Apparently he never heard the whistle, but one of the 2 blind mice needed to even things up at that point.
Terrible call by the official.
Shame on the Kings fans for getting loud in their own building.
[Reply]
nyfingfan – Zeus’s penalty was for shooting the puck in the net? You’ve got to be kidding me. I thought it was a lame equalizer penalty when Kunitz roughed him up.
Btw, what was that earlier comment about the game not being on TV based on? I was at the game, fortunately, but I know the game was scheduled to be shown on Fox Sports West.
[Reply]
The bias is unreal…
Check out Nhl.com…the top headline story is:
“Sid the Kid has turned into a shootout star”
This comes in the morning after the kings shut down the penguins as well as sid the squid with ZERO points.
[Reply]
Big A- I think what nykingfan meant to say is that the upcoming Saturday and Monday games will not be televised on tv which totally sucks.
[Reply]
^^ Yes, but the main graphic is a huge picture of Kopi after he scored the first goal. WHAT A GAME! My first game in my mew 40″ HD, BEAUTIFUL, just wish I could have been at the game though.
[Reply]
The NHL Network is calling Kopi the “A-Train”. I’m diggin’ that.
[Reply]
Hey Gello, Mondays game against the Hawks will be on Versus.
[Reply]
Sooo much fun. Been to every game this year. This topped them all. Crowd was into it. Game was exciting. I went home with a sore throat but feeling just absolutely elated.
This was big. I was at a few bars downtown before the game and saw Crosby’s name on every other persons back. The crowd was loud when the Pens scored too, but we certainly out played those chumps on the ice, and the crowd responded well out cheering the chumps in the stands.
[Reply]
Gotcha. Thanks Gello & Sebastian. Didn’t know that about the upcoming broadcasts.
AZ King – I like the Kings getting attention, but is the NHL Network unaware of Anton Volchenkov? Seriously, A-Train is such an overused sports nickname to begin with, but Volchy’s had it for quite awhile.
[Reply]
There is something terribly wrong with the universe…this site is oozing positivity and there are complementary posts regarding DL.
Where’s all the haters?
[Reply]
Thanks NYK Fan, pretty lame call, but at least it wasn’t for him doing something regarding kunitz. Anyone else notice that cindy likes to skate in circles rather than wait for the faceoff like every other player? I saw him do that once or twice, maybe its something he does to get under the other teams skin, but it didnt seem to bother the Kings, just bothered me. That, and them being late to take the ice to start the 3rd, I guess they knew what was coming, huh? I forgot to mention the faceoffs, what was it, 70-80% for us? Awesome, just freaking awesome. What a game.
[Reply]
Very nice boys!

A few random thoughts-
Kopi is still developing. (SCARY!)
Williams played like a BEAST! (Patrick o’WHO?)
What was with Stolly’s pass to Brown from the slot? Even HE couldn’t believe he made that. That is his Wheelhouse! Who knew he had vision.
Oh yeah, and that Smyth guy. 6.5Mil bucks? Phffftt! Who CARES what we pay him! Never had a mancrush in my life, but I feel one developing here. I may just become Canadian just to be closer to him.
Who kicked Scott Parse in the a$$ and can I kiss the boot that did it?
Teddy Purcell had his Wheaties last night too. Aggressive as hell! Now let’s just hope he doesn’t have Fro’s disease.
Speaking of the Chronic FailToShowUP Syndrome sufferer, [b]THANKS FOR SHOWING UP LAST NIGHT FRO![/b] I still can’t believe that he actually finished a check last night. I almost hit my head on the ceiling fan from jumping out of my chair! (and I have 10 ft ceilings).
Simmonds fell down about 20 times last night going for pucks. Joe Caligiuri gets the hammer and now Sims can’t stand on his skates.
Workboots baby, workboots!
The rubber band man stood on his NADS last night! Guerin could have shot a gumball at Quick last night and he would have stopped it. He had Billy’s number and Guerin was PISSED!
Drewiskie just continues to blow me away with his poise. He’s becoming the 2nd coming of Ray Bourque, except nobody knows who the hell he is!
Let me ask for the 100,000th time: Is Drew Doughty [b]REALLY[/b] 19?!?!? :duh:
Scuds was NAILS against his old team. I really wanted him to score on that shot 20 feet out from the left circle. He got all of that one.
My only negative: Jack (Massive Fail) Johnson. You looked bad tonight JJ. Maybe you were too busy reminicing about your buddy #87 and forgot you were playing a game. I understand. Now STOP IT! C’mon Son!
What a GAME! How could Fox Sports not step up and decide to televise the Saturday game now? Sad and Pathetic. STEP IT UP FOX! Other than that, I can’t stop smiling!
[Reply]
Actually, the call on Zeus was for roughing… typical “penalize the guy who gets pushed” penalty. Everyone thought it was for shooting the puck, but that would’ve been unsportsmanlike conduct if it was called. Either way, not a good call by the refs.
[Reply]
in regards to games NY teams always on TV. Teams like the Yankees have their own TV network where they get revenue from ads so they don’t need to blackout the game on tv to get the people in the stands.
what i don’t get is for us in LA, it seems that most of the games blacked out are away games in Canada. Anyone know why?
[Reply]
Heh, I thought, “Oh boy, everyone will be happy today, none of the usual Fro crit or the usual TM crit will possibly be there” but it always happens anyway. Every game Frolov gets a point is “Oh well, he finally showed up there for a leeetle bit.” Every game TM wins is “really” more due to DL. C’mon. They all did good.
[Reply]
Thanks Sebastian. I thought I’m going to have withdrawals if I have to wait till Wednesday LOL.
[Reply]
quick q: on the brownie goal during the delayed penalty, does all the players(6 players) get a +1 since the goalie is pulled? or since we have an extra attacker, it doesnt count? can someone clarify that? thanx
[Reply]
on kopi’s 2nd goal, i think williams is actually passing the puck to kopi. i wouldnt be surprised if they did that in practice. i think the smarts of smyth and williams are just incredible. they use every part of the rink to their advantage.
this is pure hockey sense. kind of like quincey when he was with the kings. he would shoot the puck towards the net during the power play. not the hard kind of shots, but the kind that allows the foward to tip it or shoot it when the goalie is screened. the smart players know that its not about the speed of the shot but the placement and timing of the shot. kind of like in basketball where u do a stutter step to freeze the defender.
those are the type of hockey sense/experience that has to be reminded/taught off. thats where the williams and smyths bring u
[Reply]
A-train for Kopitar?
Gotta be ‘K-train’…
!!!!!!!!
[Reply]
Well DLB-
Fro was tongue in cheek, although he was somewhat absent the first 2 periods. I wish I knew what fires him up like he was in the 3rd so I could artificially reproduce it and put it in his Gatorade each game.
I will regress my Jack Johnson comment. Massive Fail was too harsh. Minor Fail would have been more appropriate. You’re right, he wasn’t that bad.
[Reply]
While I too am quick to point out that the third periods of the last two games were probably the best the Kings have played in 6 or 7 seasons, I would like to congratulate MARK EATON for one of the WORST games I have ever seen an NHL defenseman have. Man, did he suck. And, all the proof you need is in the replays
Fleury was not very good, because he had NO help from his D… his inability to get the puck to guys who COULDN’T make the first pass to begin with was comical, but Eaton… whew, smell the fromage, baby…
[Reply]
Sorry guys for not clarifying which game wasn’t on TV. My bad.
Nightman…you’re right about the Yankees and the Mets having their own networks. The Rangers and the Knicks are owned by Dolan, who owns cablevision, which televises their games, but the Islanders don’t have their own, nor do the Nets, yet every game is on TV. I don’t get it. I can’t even understand the Canadian games not being on TV. To us fans, every one of the 82 games is huge.
[Reply]
Eric K
No, the call was changed to unsportsmanlike conduct..not roughing.
The only explanation for the penalty was because he shot the puck into the net after the whistle. He didn’t lay a glove or push or do anything to get a roughing call.
That’s what i saw. Jim Fox also mentioned it on the air.
Maybe Rich can ask TM what the refs told him about the call.
[Reply]
Eric K-
The penalty on Zeus was Unsportsmanlike. It was originally announced a roughing, but the refs figured out that they can’t give a roughing penalty to a guy who didn’t even try to through a punch. Since he was already in the box they had to give him something so they changed it to unsportsmanlike for taking the late shot.
[Reply]
nykingfan, I didn’t see your post when I was writing mine. Didn’t mean to ride on your coat-tails.

Read my posts…I can use all the help you can give me
[Reply]
The game on Saturday isn’t being televised because of Pac-10 football.
[Reply]
I was very critical of Kopi last year, and rightfully so, because he sucked. He was absurdly out of shape and didn’t do much to help the team succeed. This year, however, I couldn’t be more pleased. I don’t say that because he leads the league in points, in all honesty, I can care less about the points, I’m impressed with every other part of his game. He’s in shape, and the ability to actually skate is amazing. Who knew we would use Kopi and speed in the same sentence. He’s playing outstanding defense, he’s making good decisions with the puck, he’s driving to the net with intent, with the attitude of “I dare you to stop me”. He’s battling along the boards and on many occasions is winning the one on one battles. I’ve seen him finish more checks this year than all other years combined. How great is that. Then of course you can add the points to go along with all the other things he’s doing well. Congrats Kopitar, you are playing your ass off and it’s a pleasure to watch. I hope you have thanked Smyth and Williams more than once because they are another big reason why you’re having so much success. Keep the process rolling Kopi, you are seeing what HARD WORK and DEDICATION will do for you.
[Reply]
Nice article, Rich, I can feel the joy in the words.
You mention celebs, but isn’t that Pat Sajak sitting in the stands behind Quick in the pic?
[Reply]
@duckhunter,
Kopitar sucked last year? Where is this coming from?
The guy clearly had potential and like many youngsters maybe didn’t quite “get” what he was supposed to do and how to get there. With some help from management, he figured it out over the summer and has clearly moved to the next level.
[Reply]
i’m willing to bet once the kings make the playoffs, we will see a “beefed up” tv schedule next season
[Reply]
This team has arrived!, who didnt play well last night, all 4 lines were all over the freaking ice, especially the 3rd they were possessed, thought simmonds was unbelievable, brownie was hittin everything, fro was on the puck constantly, top line was flyin. Wow we have somethin awesome here…PLEASE TM DONT TOUCH THE LINEUP OR LINES LETS KEEP IT GOIN1!!!
[Reply]
Hey Kwaz: Nice to see another Leykis fan around…too bad Tom isn’t. I miss that on-air rhetoric.
[Reply]
dMan…I’m with Duckhunter, although I don’t know if I would use the words sucked last year.
I was extremely critical of Kopitar last year as well…many of us were.
Reason being…we all could see what his true potential is. But the fact that he wasn’t playing up to that potential, was timid, was clearly out of shape, etc. caused many of us to call him out (including Lombardi and his coaching staff).
I think he is proving to us all just what he can do. The best part is…it’s only beginning. He can get better.
[Reply]
@ griddle – I checked the schedule at the beginning of the year, and rejoiced (as a DirecTV NHL Center Ice subscriber) that there were no games on “the VS Network.” Well, they bought Monday night out from under us. Just ain’t right.
[Reply]
That is the kind of game I have waiting to see the Kings play!!! All four lines played great and Quick finally played the way we expect him to!
[Reply]
If it hasn’t been mentioned already. The replay on FSW starts at noon. Set your dvr’s, if you didn’t last night.
An instant classic.
Go Kings!
[Reply]
Seemed to me like Fleury folded under the pressure in the third period, right when Quicker hit his stride. As a Kings fan who in past years saw way too many other teams’ goaltenders standing on their heads, it felt good.
[Reply]
RE: Cynic
I thought JJ looked fine. Solid defensively. Great breakout passes…everytime. Would like to see him use his hands/speed more to rush it up, esp on PP’s but it seems like the coaching staff doesn’t want him to. Maybe they want him to focus on his D more right now? Not sure. Maybe a question for Rich to ask?
Scuds was actually at fault on the 2nd goal for letting his check go which allowed Orpik to get the shot off that Kunitz tipped. Not knocking him…just if you’re going to knock JJ and praise Scuds, you might want to look closer.
I’m not sure why there are so many JJ haters. He’s been solid this season. Just not putting up the offensive numbers yet. But again, that could go back to what the coaches are asking of him.
[Reply]
Mudfish
I think the reason people are hard on JJ is because of the advanced hype.
He was supposed to be what DD is. It’s completely unfair because DD is an absolute freak, but unfortunately, that’s the reality of the situation.
JJ is nowhere near what he will become. His talent is obvious. It’s just taking a normal amount of time for him to blossom. Normal is not what Doughty is. Doughty is in the class of Leetch and Bourque right now.
[Reply]
Forget A-train
I say A-BOMB!
[Reply]
I’m good with “Top scoring player in the NHL.” I like the way that rolls off the tongue.
[Reply]
dMan,
Although the word “sucked” may have been a bit harsh, I got that from watching 70-75 games last year. Maybe I should have said, “he just wasn’t very good.” If you take all the positives I mentioned above and reverse them, you’d have Kopi’s performance last year. I don’t think many people would argue that, though he did start improving late in the year. Not good enough from a individual who has all the tools needed to be successful and who is looked upon to be a difference maker. This isn’t a personal attack against you or Kopitar for that matter, it’s just what I witnessed the majority of the year. I just wrote 200 words of praise for Kopitar this year but you chose to comment on the one comment I made about last year, that’s interesting to me…
