The fathers (and sons, and everyone) enjoyed a great dinner last night, and now they’re heading over to check out the morning skate. Here’s the list of fathers on the trip…
Bryan Brown, Paul Doughty, David Drewiske, Jim Greene, Jim Harrold, Jack Johnson Sr., Butch Jones, Matjaz Kopitar, Ted Purcell, Doug Quick, Jim Richardson, Bob Scuderi, Cyril Simmonds, Jim Smyth, Tim Stoll.
Hoping to get some anecdotes at the skate today…
So, Purcell is a Junior? Also, the blog clock is sill in daylight savings mode.

Dude, David Drewiskie named his son Davis?!!! Shame on him LOL
[Reply]
David/Davis Drewiske, Ted/Teddy Purcell, Jack Sr/Jr Johnson, Bob/Rob Scuderi.. Hilarious!
[Reply]
Oops *still* in daylight savings mode.
[Reply]
Wish I could make practice today! Oh well…
[Reply]
hopefully the other fathers are keeping Jack Johnson, Sr. away from all microphones, TV cameras, and reporters in general.
[Reply]
Sounds like a great time for the Dads and sons.
Hopefully Jack Sr. lets his son speak for himself on this trip.

List of dads not there:
Mr. Williams
Mr. Parse
Mr. Handzus
Mr. Ivanans
Mr. O’Donnell
Mr. Ersberg
and the most interesting one to me… Frolov’s pop.
Odds are someone’s father is no longer with us.

Jacks real name is Joseph
[Reply]
John Joseph Louis Johnson III. Talk about a mouthful.

Nice to see the D-corps dads so well represented! Is Kopi’s dad making pancakes?

Off-topic:
I’ve been exchanging emails with TSN’s Scott Cullen, who somehow thinks his Kings’ 16th power ranking is evidence that his “system” is superior to all the systems that have the Kings in the top ten. Scott.Cullen@ctv.ca thinks it helps his case that the Kings lost by shootout to two teams in his top ten after the rankings were published.

David to Davis, what the hell is that? How was that conversation in the hospital? Dad: Well I’d like to give him my name…Mom interrupts: NO. He is his own person, he needs his own name and identity! Dad: (to himself) Hmmm… I know, let’s change ONE letter. Bavid Cavid Favid Gavid Havid Lavid Mavid Navid Pavid Ravid [Ravid, now there's a hockey name!] Savid Tavid. Screw it. Davib Davig Davil Davin Davim Davir Davip Davis Davit, whoa wait what was that DAVIS? Oh I like that. Davis. To wife: Honey, how about Davis?
[Reply]
FWIW, I think it’s evidence of what an abomination the shootout is.

Couldn’t tell you why, but I liked reading the names of their fathers. Good stuff. Thanks Rich!

Sorry for the double post. I tried to post the first one and it told me I had already said that. So I changed it and tried again and now there are two! Woops!

Very cool! I think all of us who played hockey remember being 10 years old and looking over and smiling at dad after we scored a goal. I’m almost 30 and I still get excited when my dad comes to my crappy games.
[Reply]
for what its worth, I remember during Rob Blake’s rookie season his dad (who is a pretty big guy!) sitting in the stands at the old Iceoplex watching Rob during practice and participate in the drills. At the end of every practice, Rob would immediately come over and sit down and listen to his dad’s assessment. It was pretty cool to see and I think mirrors what DL was saying about the bond between father and son in hockey and in sports for that matter. That is of course unless your name is ‘Lindros’.
[Reply]
I would like to see what Raitis’ dad looks like. He’s probably in Latvia. Latvia? How good of a hockey player must you be to get out of Latvia?
[Reply]
Like everyone else has said, a big LOL at the David/Davis Drewiske.
I wonder if this causes any discomfort to those players that no longer have their fathers with them (on the trip or in life). Couldn’t help but feel bad for the players listed that didn’t have their pops with em.

rich…
can you find out how mr. kopitar pronounces his name…?
thanks…!
[Reply]
Teddy Purcells first name is actually Edward
[Reply]
I think they waited to have this Father/Son thing until after Patty O’Sullivan was no longer on the team.
I know, I know, OUCH

Re Kopi’s dad’s name. Need to know if the “Z” has a caron over it, you know the diacritical mark that looks like a tiny “v”. Some Slovenian Matjaz’s have em, some don’t. Without the caron, it’s pronounced “Matt-y(i)as” with the “i” being a brief “ee”. With the caron, it is “Matt-y(i)adj” with the dj sounding like the j in jungle. Know that this is the Slavic form of the name Mathew, most resembling Mattias, as in Norstom.

Macdup….WRONG…I was going to type a paragraph about how wrong it is but, I’m sure you know better.
As for the Pops in attendence…I’m very excited. I would love to thank Simmonds pop for raising a great kid whom has some mad skillz. Go Kings!

( @Macdup I thought that for a split second then washed my mouth out with Lifebuoy)
- Juraj Mikus’s dad could not make the trip, but we celebrate his other son’s birthday every year on December 25th.
- Sadly Rich doesn’t mention the unfortunate mix-up when Sean O’Donnell was invited to Phoenix as Doughty’s father. The situation was quickly rectified.

Ivanans’ dad couldn’t get away from filming Red Scorpion 2……

Re: BringBackTheShieldJersey
Yes, Kopi’s dad has a “caron” over Z. So it’s “Matjaž”.
The other form, that you described quite well, is spelled Matijas, but it’s very rare and i’m not sure that it originates in Slovenia.
As for pronunciation of the “Ž”…i think it’s best described by Phoebe at 1:08 in the following video
(no… seriously, she’s spot on)

I have no class so it was OK for me to go forward with these thoughts. Plus it is the internet, no one takes the internet seriously right! /s
I do feel for the guy (POS), and as a new dad who is hopefully going to have kids in sports I hope I am not going to be an overbearing parent. I hope I am more like Ed O’Neal in the pilot for Modern Family.
Any idea if the Kings Vision crew is going to interview any of the Dads during the games?

sorry, I am such a nice guy in real life too. My internet alter ego gets the better of me.
Go Kings Go…

Come on, no need to be so sensitive, Patty’s an Oiler now
Seriously though I didn’t sense any malicious intent from Macdup’s comment so let’s not have the morality police descend upon him please.
Huge lol’s at the Odie/Doughty father-son mixup comment and the Red Scorpion 2 tidbit too
[Reply]
That’s OK Macdup. Meg stole my Pancakes question and Shakes beat me to a Mikus quote.
No Halos in this bunch.
Speaking of God, Juraj Mikus’s dad is everywhere, so he’ll be there.
Speaking of Juraj Mikus, if he has a son, he’ll be called ‘The 3rd Coming’.
We need to start the ‘Six Degrees of Juraj Mikus’. It works for Kevin Bacon: http://www.thekevinbacongame.com/
[Reply]
Probably a good thing they are taking them on a road trip, I know I would like to buy some of these dad’s a beer or two. By the end of the night that could be a bad thing for them
[Reply]
You cant play ‘Six Degrees of Juraj Mikus’. The result is always the same…Mikus is seperated by everyone in the world by only 1 degree.
[Reply]
Ten…ah-HA! TRUE, but since people don’t believe it, playing the game would make them a believer. Education is key my friend.
Maybe we could play ‘Six Degrees of Rich Hammond’?
[Reply]
Thanks, Macdup, for the comment and the link. Being a relatively new fan of the team, these are the comments and stories that fill in my Kings knowledge and give me a better sense of the team and players. Nothing “classless” about it. If hockey fans think such a joke is out of line, just imagine what the rest of the lame-a$$, PC world would say…
[Reply]
@Cynic and ten for instigating, the 6 Degrees of Mikus is classic
I think “Six Degrees of Rich Hammond” would be scary because somehow Anthony would be related to all of us.

-quote- “- Sadly Rich doesn’t mention the unfortunate mix-up when Sean O’Donnell was invited to Phoenix as Doughty’s father. The situation was quickly rectified.”
Classic! I’m sure Mr. Doughty (Biological that is) slipped OD a couple of C notes for the great job he’s done taking care of him.
Seriously though, this is no BS, I was at the KC game and as far as I’m concerened OD earned his entire salary that game while dishing out a beating. That kind of old school play goes a long way in letting a kid know he’s clear to go ahead and play “his” game.
OD plays with alot of heart and the league knows it!

Gonna throw this out right now, Big Dave Drewiske is one of the BEST guys you’ll ever meet. Probably bought half of Staples a beer during/after the Kings/Sharks season finale last year when Davis had two assists and was #1 star.
[Reply]
you should post pictures of all the dads and sons together

I ran into Doughty’s dad at the MGM Grand …. nice guy.
