(on tonight’s secondary scoring, from Frolov, Stoll and Handzus…) KOPITAR: “It’s always great to see. Sometimes two goals is not enough from the first line, and everybody else contributed right in and it was really nice to see. If you want to be a consistent team, you need that secondary scoring too, for sure, and [...]
Chimera upset with Scuderi's hit
Tonight’s game was colored, early on, by Rob Scuderi’s hit on Jason Chimera midway through the first period. Was it dirty? It was a hip check that certainly appeared to be a clip, one in which Scuderi took Chimera out below the waist, at the knees. Columbus immediately responded, and Derek Dorsett got a game [...]
Williams out Wednesday
Notes and quotes from the locker room to come, but first, Terry Murray said after the game that Justin Williams will not play on Wednesday at San Jose, which once again pushes back the estimate for Williams’ return. Lots of stuff to come, including some reaction to Rob Scuderi’s hit on Jason Chimera.
FINAL: Kings 6-2
Kings improve to 8-4 with their fourth consecutive win. Two-goal nights for Anze Kopitar and Alexander Frolov. More from the locker room soon…
Kings 6, Columbus 2
Alexander Frolov scored his second goal of the game, on the power play. Steve Mason saved Drew Doughty’s shot, but Frolov got the rebound and tossed a backhand shot at the net, through traffic and from a tough angle, that somehow squeezed past Mason at the near post with 2:02 remaining.
Kings 5, Columbus 2
The Kings answered less than two minutes later, as Alexander Frolov picked off a bad pass from Anton Stralman, skated in and showed good patience and control in front of the net before finally slipping the puck past Steve Mason. The Kings now lead the NHL in goals scored, with 43.
Kings 4, Columbus 2
The Blue Jackets got back in the game, 9:48 into the third period on a power-play goal. Rick Nash shot from the middle of the left circle. Jonathan Quick deflected it to his right, but Kristian Huselius picked it up and scored on a wraparound before Quick could cover the far post.
Kings 4, Columbus 1
The Kings scored on a 5-on-3 advantage, and an even bigger advantage after Antoine Vermette broke his stick. Jarret Stoll passed, from the middle of the left circle, to Anze Kopitar in the middle of the right circle, and Kopitar scored on a one-time shot with 57 seconds left in the period. Kopitar now leads [...]
Kings 3, Columbus 1
Some life from the Blue Jackets…Antoine Vermette cut to the net, took a quick pass from Mike Commodore and redirected it past Jonathan Quick with 5:55 left in the second period.
Kings 3, Columbus 0
Scott Parse made a nice pass out of the corner to Jarret Stoll, whose one-time shot from the slot beat Steve Mason 5:33 into the second period for a 3-0 Kings lead. The Blue Jackets, right now, look like a team ready to fly home.
End of first: Kings 2-0
No scoring in the second half of the first period, but plenty of action. With about nine minutes left in the period, Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi upended Jason Chimera with a hip check near the boards in the Kings’ zone. Chimera stayed on the ice for a couple minutes, and sustained a cut to his [...]
Kings 2, Columbus 0
Hard to beat that start for the Kings. They killed a penalty, then Michal Handzus scored 5:29 into the first period, followed by an Anze Kopitar goal 49 seconds later. Handzus took a nice cross-ice pass from Dustin Brown, bobbled the puck a bit, then took a shot that deflected off the stick of a [...]
Another chance at Columbus
The Kings tonight will attempt to avenge another loss, their 4-1 loss to Columbus last Saturday. That game, of course, was the night of The Frolov Turnover, as well as an 0-for-5 effort on the power play (although the Kings did score one very shortly after a power play ended). Not surprisingly, Terry Murray chose [...]
Alumni night
For those coming to the game tonight, stick around afterward to watch Luc Robitaille, Jim Fox, Marty McSorley, assistant coaches Mark Hardy and Jamie Kompon and other NHL alumni play in a charity game to benefit the Los Angeles Fire Department’s relief association for widows, orphans and disabled firefighters. The Kings Care Foundation will be [...]
Quick improvement
Terry Murray publicly called out goalie Jonathan Quick after Thursday’s game, mostly for a lack of concentration. Murray said this morning that he was much happier with Quick’s 30-save effort Saturday night… MURRAY: “Much better, much improved. Much better in the focus and that attitude of, `You’re going to have to beat me here tonight.’ That’s [...]
Jackets shorthanded?
On his Columbus Dispatch blog, Aaron Portzline reports that three forwards and one defenseman are injured for the Blue Jackets and that their status for tonight’s game is in doubt. Portzline said coach Ken Hitchcock did not name the players, and that the Blue Jackets have only two spare forwards, so things could get interesting. [...]
Simmonds steps up
I thought one of the more impressive plays last night was a small one, when Wayne Simmonds carried the puck up the right side, pushed the puck along the boards as a check was about to arrive, then fought through the check, picked up the puck and carried it in for a chance. Really good, [...]
Parse's NHL debut
Scott Parse exceeded all reasonable expectations for his NHL debut Saturday night. He played 10 minutes, 30 seconds — all at even strength — and didn’t record a shot on goal but made one of the nicest plays of the night, a faked shot and a pass that led directly to Jarret Stoll’s second goal, which gave [...]
Sunday morning skate
Only a handful of Kings were on the ice this morning. Terry Murray said he doesn’t expect to make any lineup changes, and Jonathan Quick will be in goal again. Justin Williams skated for about 10-15 minutes but won’t play tonight. More soon, including Murray’s praise for Simmonds, Parse and Quick…
