Waiting to talk to Sharks coach Todd McLellan, and for the start of the Kings’ morning skate. It seems that the Sharks will be without injured Devin Setoguchi and Ryan Vesce, in addition to previously injured Joe Pavelski and Torrey Mitchell. The Sharks are coming off a 4-2 road trip…
Today's notebook (Oct. 27)
If you just got home from work, and want a quick update of today’s news, notes and quotes, here’s my LAKings.com notebook from today. Thanks! Kings notebook (Oct. 27)
Purcell's lateral move: left to right
Justin Williams’ injury, Scott Parse’s promotion and Wayne Simmonds’ emergence have changed the dynamics of the Kings considerably, and it has had a trickle-down impact on Teddy Purcell, who switched lines and also switched positions, from left wing to his natural right wing. It’s a subtle change, but Purcell talked today about switching sides of [...]
Robitaille's Hall of Fame induction
I’m excited to tell all of you that I’ll be headed to Toronto next month for Luc Robitaille’s Hall of Fame induction. I’ve never been to the Hall, so I’ll be fired up to go there and, of course, bring you the best possible coverage of the entire event. The ceremony will be held on [...]
Murray not backing down
Rob Scuderi felt remorse for his hit on Jason Chimera, but Terry Murray certainly doesn’t feel any. Immediately after the game, Murray was adamant that the hit was legal, and on Tuesday, even after Scuderi’s fine, Murray didn’t back down from his assertion that Scuderi did nothing wrong. MURRAY: “Absolutely. That was the hit of [...]
Quick, and Quick
One more quick note, before the flight… Terry Murray said Jonathan Quick will be in goal for both of this week’s back-to-back games, and that Erik Ersberg has not been penciled in for a game any time in the near future… MURRAY: “I have Quick in for both of these games. They’re big games. We [...]
Williams update
Justin Williams will miss his fourth consecutive game tomorrow with his ever-mysterious lower-body injury. Terry Murray said Williams skated by himself for a half hour before Tuesday’s practice, but Williams is not making the trip to San Jose. Murray indicated that Williams is making progress, but also used the dreaded phrase “felt it” in terms [...]
Scuderi: hit on Chimera `was low'
After practice today, Rob Scuderi said he agreed that his check on Columbus’ Jason Chimera was too low, and didn’t argue the fine he received from the NHL yesterday. The maximum fine, per the collective bargaining agreement, is $1,000, so that’s almost certainly what Scuderi got, although it hasn’t been confirmed. After the game, Scuderi [...]
Bernier update
Ron Hextall says that everything checked out OK with the MRI on Jonathan Bernier’s wrist yesterday, and that Bernier is scheduled to play for Manchester this weekend. Everyone (except Williams) is on the ice for practice, with no line changes.
Morning reading
Unless you’re in other time zones, then it’s afternoon reading. Well, you get the drift. Practice isn’t until noon today, followed by a flight to San Jose, so here’s a couple stories that you might not have caught. First, a nice feature on Scott Parse in the Kalamazoo (Mich.) Gazette, Parse’s hometown paper, on his [...]
Draft coming to L.A.
It won’t be announced by the league until early December, but Kings officials have been told that Los Angeles will host the NHL Entry Draft next June. It’s still to be determined whether the event will be held at Staples Center or Nokia Center, but the dates will be June 25-26. By all accounts, it [...]
Scuderi fined, not suspended
Dean Lombardi just told me that Rob Scuderi will be fined but not suspended for his hit on Jason Chimera last night. Lombardi said he did not know the amount of the fine, and no amount has been disclosed by the league yet. (EDIT) Also: Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports that Derek Dorsett [...]
More praise for Parse
Parse, who played 10:30 in his NHL debut and had an assist, got more than two minutes of extra ice time Sunday night and picked up another assist on another Jarret Stoll goal. With Justin Williams still out, Parse will stay put, alongside Stoll and Teddy Purcell, and after Sunday’s game, Terry Murray had more [...]
Showing poise
The debate about Scuderi’s hit is an interesting one — vote in the poll below to register your opinion — but it’s also worth noting that after a couple questionable hits later in the game, specifically on Drew Doughty and Alexander Frolov, the Kings didn’t retaliate. Here’s what Rob Scuderi said after the game… SCUDERI: [...]
Kopitar named `first star'
The NHL named Anze Kopitar as its “First Star of the Week” after a four-game stretch in which he totaled six goals and three assists, including his first career hat trick. Michael Cammalleri was the second star and Patrick Marleau was the third star.
Campbell on NHL Live
Colin Campbell, the NHL’s director of hockey operations, was just on the NHL Live show and was asked about Rob Scuderi’s hit last night, and any possible discipline… CAMPBELL: “Fortunately, it’s not one of these things where they play the next night. We can look at it, the number of games we had over the [...]
Scuderi's hit (and a previous one)
Click below for a couple videos… The first is the Scuderi hit from last night on Jason Chimera, from a couple different angles. It certainly does appear that Scuderi’s initial contact was with the side of Chimera’s left knee. Then check out the second video, from near the end of last season, to see what [...]
Tonight's game story (Oct. 25)
Here’s my game story from tonight, plus the box score and highlight video. Thanks for reading! Kings beat Columbus 6-2
Postgame notes
– Anze Kopitar, with two goals, extended his point streak to six games, with six goals and five assists in those games. He now leads the NHL in goals (10) and points (21). For the NHL scoring leaders, click here. – The Kings’ eight wins are tied with Colorado for second most in the NHL, [...]
Terry Murray postgame quotes
(on winning games on consecutive nights…) MURRAY: “The two games, back to back like this, they’re important games. Early in the season, the points are always important, but I thought the game last night, to go in and play well in that building after losing opening night, and the same here tonight. The game in [...]
