Randy Jones, newest King

Randy Jones, claimed off waivers from Philadelphia today, makes $2.75 million this season, but because the Kings got him off re-entry waivers, they’ll only have to pay half of that salary. Jones is due to be an unrestricted free agent next summer. Jones, 28, had been in the Flyers’ system since 2003, so both Dean [...]

Williams (still) out

Justin Williams, and his sore lower body, will be out again tonight. Williams skated today with Trevor Lewis and Erik Ersberg for about 20 minutes but Terry Murray said Williams is still not 100 percent. Williams said he felt good and is expected to rejoin full-team practices. More on this, Randy Jones (who will arrive [...]

It’s too bad [...]

Jonathan Quick’s postgame thoughts… (on the game…) QUICK: “We played a really good first period. They might have been a little tired. They just got back from a six-game road trip. Going to shootout

First of the season for the Kings… Sharks are 0-1 this season, with a loss to Phoenix.

End of regulation: 1-1

After a flurry of activity around the Kings’ net in the final minute, they held on to earn at least a point on the road. This is the Kings’ second overtime game of the season (1-0) and the Sharks’ second (0-0-1).

End of second: 1-1

Entering tonight, the Sharks had outscored their opponents 21-13 in the second period, so the Kings escaped with a draw after being outshot 14-6 in the period. No penalties for either team in the period. Patrick Marleau now has 25 goals and 58 points in 67 career games against the Kings.

Kings 1, Sharks 1

Patrick Marleau carried the puck into the Kings’ zone, skated past Matt Greene and ripped a high shot past Jonathan Quick to tie the game with 5:28 left in the second period. Will the Kings go in a shell after a bad goal?

Kings 1, Sharks 0

Drew Doughty dumped the puck down low from the left boards to Alexander Frolov, who took on Dan Boyle behind the net and scored on a nice sweeping wraparound exactly eight minutes into the second period. Dustin Brown also got an assist.

End of first period: 0-0

The Kings outshot the Sharks 13-5 in the period and did a good job of getting the puck to the net, but the Sharks also had a couple quality chances that easily could have beat Jonathan Quick. Both teams went 0 for 2 on the power play. (per advice, on the RSS/Twitter feeds, I’ll go [...]

Start time moved

The time of the Kings’ Dec. 26 game at Phoenix has been moved back by one hour, to 6 p.m. Pacific time. That probably doesn’t mean much to those of you in Los Angeles, but there’s an interesting backstory as to why the change was made. The game was originally scheduled to start at 6 [...]

Happy with Handzus line

This relates, a bit, to yesterday’s discussion about what will happen to the lines when Justin Williams returns. Today, Terry Murray talked about the recently constructed line of Dustin Brown, Alexander Frolov and Michal Handzus. He expressed satisfaction with it, which leads back to the question of what to do with the Stoll line when [...]

Making Quick work

Jonathan Quick will be back in goal tonight for the Kings…and tomorrow night against Vancouver…and every other night until Terry Murray decides he wants another look. Quick hasn’t had trouble with a heavy workload in the past, but I wanted to get his opinion on it, and also how he deals with it in a [...]

Kopitar feature

Here’s the feature I wrote on Anze Kopitar for LAKings.com. Thanks for reading! Kopitar’s Big Summer Leads to Big Fall Also, in those process of doing this story, I got an enormous volume of quotes from Dean Lombardi about Kopitar. I thought it would be good to transcribe them and share them, because they give [...]

The view from San Jose

Here’s what Sharks coach Todd McLellan said about the Kings this morning.. MCLELLAN: “They’re very impressive. They’re obviously playing with a tremendous amount of confidence. When they got to the start line this year, they felt good about themselves. Kopitar, Ryan Smyth (is) as good a pair as there is in the league right now. [...]
