Lewis to Manchester

Trevor Lewis has been assigned to Manchester of the American Hockey League. No surprise, given that Lewis has turned into the regular healthy scratch. It’s also very good news for Scott Parse, who presumably will be staying once Justin Williams is back. Parse certainly earned a spot, in my opinion. Good move?

Yes, this is a good move. Lewis, I think, will get better quicker playing with Moller & Loktionov and playing on the 4th line up here or being a healthy scratch

Who sits for Williams return? Parse deserves to stay and Purcell looked healthy again last night against Vancouver. Does Murray sit Harrold or Ivanans?

Purcell has 1-2 more games to play like he did last night before the potential return of JW… then what do you do? If he excels and plays like last night, then I think Harrold gets sent down, and Purcell takes 4th line duty and PP time…. since I think Parse probably has earned his spot on 3 for now… Simmonds will drop down to 3 to fill the Purcell Hole…

Right move for now, but I’m going to wait and see what happens when the adrenaline wears off. Parse has been solid, though.

Purcell seems to be doing what most young players do–play inconsistently. TM will get that under control, though. As a coach, he may have his issues, but he’s very clear on consistent effort, and Purcell needs that more than anything else right now.

I think Loktionov deserves a couple games up here
before too long. Might not be good for his ego playing with two guys who didn’t stick, watching another guy go up, and not get a chance himself.

I agree Maz…I love the way Parse is playing right now. It’s up to him what he does with the rest of his career. If he continues playing the way he is, he’ll be a fixture in the lineup. If he slips, he’ll be joining Lewis in Manchester.

I remember when Lewis came up the first time. He showed energy and pretty good compete level. So far this year, he’s done nothing but earn the trip to Manchester. There’s no more time for kids from Manchester to ease their way into the NHL. With the talent level we have, when you get the chance, you better run with it or someone else will take it away from you quickly.

    excellent stuff…!

parse has been very impressive…every time he’s on the ice, he does something noticeable in a positive way…

i think teddy has got some potential…when he moves his legs, teddy shows excellent vertical movement and good ice awareness..

to me, teddy’s problem seems to be a combo of not using positioning/his body enough to establish space and learning how to hit the seams and holes (timing) at the nhl level…

maybe he will get another chance this year…maybe he won’t…but parse has definitely showed all of us that he brings “forward” energy…parse seems to be moving with the flow of the puck, driving towards the offensive zone, without getting ahead of the play…

i can’t stressed that last point enough….parse shows very good instincts and seems to have really learned the system very well…i really like how he puts himself squarely behind the puck and in control of the play when driving…he also has showed us that he is very capable of getting his shot off…and some nifty stick-handles and passing…he might be a great find for us…

so far, so good…keep it up, parse…!

the kings will be probably taking fliers on him

Parse certainly doesn’t look or play like a rookie…he just looks in control shift and shift. He’s also a few years older than Lewis and some of the others which makes the difference as we all have witnessed.

With the addition of Jones, its time for Harrold to go. He’s not a forward and deserves a shot with another team thats looking for a 5 or 6 d-man. He makes just under $600k this year and next and with the glut of injuries to d-men around the league, DL should be able to get something in return.

Really good pre-season and first couple of games. Then he gets sick. Obviously it’s going to be a struggle. I can’t play pool when I have the flu let alone hockey. He had some get up and go last night so I figure he’s finally well again.

Why oh why would you break up the Parse-Stoll-Purcell line. They have obviously developed some excellent chemistry as a unit, Purcell is playing much better since Parse came in because his is playing his natural position, RW. These guys haven proven they can score. Do not break them up. We need the secondary scoring. Purcell will outscore Simmonds if he stays on the third line or higher, bank on it, his offensive skill set is higher.

  26. iansez says:

Purcell & Lewis (Frolov too?) seem to lack the “Simmonds factor”, the quality of “intention”. If a player can produce a gut-wrenching high level of determination consistently every night all other elements align behind that, winning the 1 on 1 battles, making plays, driving to the net etc etc Some guys just find it harder to do than others and never realize the potential they have.. Not to get too deep on everyone here in the kingdom blogesphere…;)

  27. BluLiner says:

Purcell had a positive game last night, but I think the pressure is getting to him. He missed some great chances and seemed to be holding the stick a little tight.

Lets also shake up the 2nd and 3rd lines. Two goals in 2 games doesnt make it. Lets put Stoll with Frolov and Brown (and TM needs to tell Frolov and Brown to work together a little more instead of the individual efforts that are not resulting in points). Then put Handzus back with Simmonds and add Parse/Purcell. I like Parse better right now, but maybe give Purcell a further opportunity to keep playing a strong game. Harrold out.

Off point, but I loved when Ivan came out on the PP yesterday to counter the Canuck rough stuff. It worked, Mitchell stopped yapping immediately. I also didnt mind that Ivan planted himself in the crease.

  28. Cynic says:

I had mentioned it before because I think it’s true. This is Parse’s one and ONLY opportunity to make it to the NHL with the Kings and he’s making the best of it. He said as much himself in one interview. He didn’t get a preseason game and he’s thinking in Manchester ‘I better do something’. He’s doing it and not looking back.

Parse knows he’s not going to get looked at like Teddy Purcell, Brian Boyle, Hickey, Lewis, etc. do and did because of where he was drafted. He knows this is his chance and most likely there will not be another one unless he strings this out for a while.

I wish him the best of luck. Quisp has to be beaming as he’s liked this guy from day one IIRC.

  29. Dan H. says:

Not to bash a guy but when has Purcell showed he can score at the NHL level? He got second line minutes the first 10 games and PP as well and he’s still on the second PP line and not doing anything to put it in the net.

  32. Quisp says:

    re waivers:

Harrold would have to clear waivers, so he will not be sent down (since he wouldn’t clear and he would be lost). Purcell is waiver-exempt for another 16 NHL games, so he can be sent down if needed.

Smyth/Kopitar/Williams (since TM has said as much)
    Parse/Stoll/Brown
    Frolov/Handzus/Simmonds (oldie but goodie)
    Purcell/Richardson/Harrold
    (Ivanans)
    Scuderi/Doughty
    Drewiske/Johnson
    SOD/Greene
    (Jones)

    Quick/E

Martinez is on IR. That’s 22 names, 23 when Martinez is activated. No need to send anyone down. However, when/if Rich Clune is ready to go, then it will get interesting. I don’t think Loktionov is going to get called up unless Stoll really stumbles or there is an inj**y to Stoll or Kopitar, and even then I wonder if it isn’t smarted just to bring back Lewis (a natural center). Loktionov is going to be a star in the NHL I believe, but at this point he’s even smaller and slighter and younger than Moller.

As far as whether Purcell can score at the NHL level, I think the answer is a definite yes in terms of sheer skill. It’s always been a level of intensity, commit, whatever you want to call it. Like Kopitar last year, it’s taking him some time to come around to it, but he’s finally shown this season that he can do it. Plays like last night where Parse’s pass glance off his stick aren’t going to continue to happen. In fourth months time (I’m picking a number) that’s a game winning goal (of which Teddy already has two this year — no, I’m wrong, he only has one; why did I think it was two? Five people have one and Handzus has three).

I was not big on Parse when he was putting up great numbers in college.

He finally signed after holding out for a while, and got hurt. Got healthy, and got hurt again. Actually, I think he spent basically his first 2 professional seasons basically hurt.

Looks like he is finally healthy now, and I see why he dominated in college so much.

He sees the ice VERY well, and just makes smart plays all the time. His positioning is exceptional, and defensively, he is not a liability the way most kids are.

Hell…the kid once played a few games as a defenseman in college when his team had a rash of injuries.

The question does become, what happens when Williams returns. Me…I have no clue.

I don’t think so. Lewis is 22. He’s played eleven games in his career. He is a solid hockey player and will be, I think, a solid NHL player when he grows up. Lots of people are invisible their first 10 games. I’m sure we could dig up some names to prove this.

This year might not be his year. So far, it’s not. I would like to see him stick, so we can see him for a season. Next year? Who knows. The Kings have some depth now, so it may not be with the Kings. But I would put money on him making it somewhere in the big show.

Dan H. – Yes, yes, and more yes.

It’s all well and good to say don’t break up the Purcell line, but let’s be realistic. Purcell is supposed to be a scorer. He has been given lots of ice time and has been VERY inconsistent. It’s not a knock against the guy, but we have some organizational depth now and being a placeholder won’t cut it.

I’ll admit that Purcell has shown flashes of real skill. But he is definitely holding the stick tight and has missed some opportunities that as a scorer, he should have buried.

Bottom line, I’d like to see him play a few more games because I’m rooting for him to start to come into his own with the skills that he possesses. It’s gotta be a tough, pressure-filled spot to be in, but hey – this is the 09-10 Kings ;) Time to step up.

This still doesn’t answer who the top 3 lines will be. Parse and Stoll are a tough combo to break up.

I agree with Quisp. I think Purcell is going to have to play on the 4th line until someone is injured or ineffective. That’s unfortunate for Purcell since I think the 4th line minutes are going to shrink with more time off between games over the next couple weeks.

  51. Barry's Mullet says:

Williams makes the first line that much better. Notice the drop off in productivity from Smyth in the last 5+ games….coincidence….I think not! Chemistry is the name of the game and the top lines on good teams have it!

Secondary scoring seems to be our problem, very inconsistent. The last few games, teams are now just focusing on the top line. I don’t care who plays on the second and third lines just get the job done!

If you really think about it, both the second and third lines can really be put together with any combination of 7 or 8 players currently on the roster. Who are the checkers? Who are the play makers? Who are the snipers? They seem to be all play a similar style.

Lots of ice time meaning more than 4th line minutes, so that he has an opportunity to actually create something. He’s getting 10-13 minutes a game. I hardly expect him to be skating Frolov and Kopitar type minutes. I thought that was obvious.

Parse is the type of player that this roster could use. He seems to play a well rounded game with some definite offensive upside. Until the fourth line is upgraded the team will not hit its peak and be a serious contender. Between Ivanans, Harrold, Lewis, and Richardson the fourth line has continued to be a weak spot on this team, minus 11 or so between them on the season.

No, it’s not obvious. If that’s “lots”, what do you call Kopitar’s 21 minutes? Lots and Lots?

Gimmee a break. That’s not “a lot” and you know it.

And another thing. I keep hearing Purcell is supposed to be a “scorer”. I’m sorry, but Purcell’s a playmaker first and foremost (See Parses goal last night). Sure, he can pot a few but he’s primarily a setup guy.

    Ovechkin and Heatley are “scorers”.

Mr. Shrimp, I agree with you completely. Purcell is always protrayed as a scorer. But watching him, he is a playmaker. When Ted gets the puck in front net he doesn’t appear to look for an opening to attack the net as much as look for a ‘cutting’ forward to pass to.

As for Parse, what a welcome suprise. With any luck at all he can end up like some other notable late round draft choices … Zetteberg, Lindstrom, Datsuyk.

If we heard that he thought he played ok but it was this or that person’s decision so I have to make the best of it, etc. then he needs to stay in Manchester for a while until he figures it out. If it was akin to “I didn’t play well and I don’t have a justification. I have to go back, work on my game, earn my way back and not let this happen again,” then we have something.
