So much for not seeing a story on it…I would interested to hear DL’s thoughts on why we took this guy.
[Reply]
Cool, the “neck breaker”!
[Reply]
Wow that’s huge… I really like it though, nice move
[Reply]
Jones at half-price. That’s probably good.
SOD/Doughty
Scuderi/Johnson
Drewiske/Greene
Jones
When there was a chance Scuderi might be suspended and would therefore miss the SJS game, I suddenly felt this big gaping hole in the d that was not going to be filled by Peter Harrold.
I can’t say Randy Jones has ever made an impression on me, other than he’s big and he hits and can pass a little. I gather from the Philly blog people that he sometimes has defensive lapses. I guess we’ll see what that means, soon enough. As a 7th d, that sounds like a good pick-up.
[Reply]
Big, hits, defensive lapses, former flyer, hmmm, sounds familiar…
[Reply]
Jones is perfect as a limited play time 7th d-man. Nice pick-up.
[Reply]
So this means were going after Marleau next season huh? Not a bad pickup by DL. We got the cap space.
[Reply]
“Big, hits, defensive lapses, former flyer, hmmm, sounds familiar…” Seriously. We need another one of these guys? Is Mike Rathje available?
[Reply]
Another Philadelphia scrub.
Man, TM must have DL in his pocket. Maybe even owns him.
This Philly obsession is sickening.
[Reply]
hahahahahaha Denis Gauthier wanna-be.. But at least he’s young and hopefully won’t be taking stupid penalties. I love the way Peter Harrold and Brad Richardson are playing, they outplayed San Jose’s 4th line yesterday, big time. Everyone here was always chirping Richardson, but I kept saying that he will come around and show us his skills, the guy fits perfectly on our 4th line and when Clune comes back up, our team will be scary from the 1st to the 4th line..
Go Kings!
[Reply]
y’know…
i didn’t post anything about him in the past, but i truly did have a feeling that rj would be in a kings uniform sooner than later…
he could be a really good addition and provides us with more depth…i like this signing…
[Reply]
Good pickup. Provides additional depth in case of injury instead of relying on young Manchester talent. Can relieve OD on certain nights. Not a huge liability. Good price. Can even help with the kids in Manchester if need be.
Certainly not a ‘missing piece’ but good short term asset.
[Reply]
BREAKING NEWS: Malkin evidently will be out for two to three weeks. How ironic as the Pens will be playing the Kings in that period. Oh well….. would have been interesting.
[Reply]
I’m iffy on this pickup but I understand it. Philly fans HATE this guy. Call him a waste of a roster spot. We’re getting the discount, good. Marc nathan eluded to the prospect fallout. We made room by putting Martinez on the IR temporarily. Obvious to me Martinez goes back to Manch. Now who leaves Manch to go to Ontario?
The other thing I was thinking about is the ’2nd Chance Syndrome’. Jones has to know he hasn’t played worth his 3mil salary. Sometimes when players get traded, or especially waived, it kind of sparks them to wake up and reasses their careers. If we could get a rejuvenated Randy Jones, might be a benefit, especially if O’D is nearing the end.
How much longer in his contract?
[Reply]
Holy cow! the sky is falling! DL & TM are manageing and coaching the kings into a losing season. His evil philly connection is ruining the team. Justin Williams is the devil! I miss Patty O! How dare he sit frolov and then not select him to go in the shootout! the outrage!
What a joke most of these negative comments are. Kings are playing great, and people still nitpick and find things to whine about.
Do i think everything DL & TM do are gold? of course not. But geez people look at the transformation this team has taken?
I’m starting to think that if the kings won the cup this year that the majority of you would still find something to complain about.
Personally, i’m enjoying the kings a lot this year. Its exciting watching this team come together and become an actual team.
That’s my 2 1/2 cents
[Reply]
More experienced depth on the team now in case of injury. Plus, maybe it’ll give Sean OD a break every once in a while so he doesn’t wear out..
We all knew Anthony was going to bash this one..Get over it, Anthony, we are all tired of your same rants.
[Reply]
You guys will grow tired of Randy Jones very quickly.
- Flyers Fan
[Reply]
Can someone explain the purpose of waivers. I understand the process, just having trouble with the reasoning.
[Reply]
Added depth for the blueline.
No more… no less.
[Reply]
Remind me what team Ryan Smith was with when he was acquired?
How about Brad Richardson?
Jack Johnson? Jason Williams? Jarret Stoll? Matt Greene? Sean O’Donnell? Rob Scuderi?
Players move around. Just take a look at all the former Kings around the league.
Seems some posters are more stuck on a Philadelphia conspiracy than the coach or the GM.
[Reply]
Lou, I couldn’t agree with you more.
[Reply]
Cynic, just til the end of this season
Yeah I was posting proposals for this guy so that we could possibly fleece a draft pick out of them ala Denis Gauthier. Doesn’t cost us any assets other than a little bit of cap space, good job!
[Reply]
Does he drop the gloves?
[Reply]
Rob S. said:

I’m hoping Jones won’t play too many minutes and used sparingly. Of course, as Cynic alluded to, a possible change of scenery might help him rejuvenate a flagging career. Perhaps Harpo and a culture change will help him solidify defensively. Let’s see how this pans out.
[Reply]
Does anyone else get the feeling that the Los Angeles Kings are going to deal Charlie Huddy to the Sabres now with the addition of Jones?
I just get the eerie feeling that Huddy is done in LA. Chuck ‘The Game’ Huddy will be missed if moved anywhere.
The last time the Kings picked up a defenseman off waivers from a perennial powerhouse it was a disaster. Quincy? Anyone recall that scrub? Couldn’t get a shot through on net to save his life? Where did he ever head to?
Randy ‘Jackson’ Jones has size, skating ability and the opportunity to compete for ice time. Sounds like a good fit for both Jones and the Kings. Plus you never know where some tutoring from Terry Murray, Hardy as well as Sean O’Donnell can lead to maybe erase some of the blunders Philly fans loathe him for. Still relatively young at 28 so here is to hoping he can become a competent and successful soldier for the Kings army.
[Reply]
Khanon says:
Does he drop the gloves?
Yes, when he showers.
[Reply]
Thanks JJ, that’s good for cap flexibility then. We still have good cap room if we need a pickup for the playoff push also. If he’s playing as a 5-6 when in for O’D @ 11 minutes a game, that would be better than Harrold, since Harry Potter is tearing it up with Richie on the 4th line anyway.
[Reply]
I’m guessing this guy is going to be a healthy scratch more often than not. He’s not here to take anyone’s job away. It’s just an insurance policy in the event of an injury or suspension. If anything, this probably means that Harrold will no longer be on the blue line.
This probably also demonstrates that Hickey and Martinez are in Manchester for the rest of the season.
[Reply]
Jones is the guy who gave Patrice Bergeron his concussion fits.
So if nothing else, he can hurt a guy. I guess that’s good? I don’t really know, haven’t seen him play much, but I have a feeling most of the complaining Philly fans have done is because of his cap hit and their ever so tenuous cap situation. Cap is not a problem for us, so we will be able to judge his contributions without that dollar bias.
Here is a little info on Jones along with the video of his hit on Bergeron from 2007.

[Reply]
Just another player some of the negative posters here hasn’t ever seen play, but are ready to jump Dean the moment they can.
[Reply]
Jones does make big hits & drops em when needed. picking up Jones could be a sign that Ivanans is on his way out. 4th line would be more productive without him anyway
Lewis/Purcell Richardson Harrold
[Reply]
People…he is nothing more than a 7th defenseman and an insurance policy for injuries, which will eventually happen.
He won’t be playing more than 10-15 minutes when he does play, which won’t be often (God willing). They have plenty of room under the cap, and his contract is up at years end.
It’s a no lose situation, unless he continues to regress like he did in Philly. Of course, in Philly, the term defenseman is pretty lose. They haven’t developed one of their own since I was in diapers.
This allows Management not to rush any of the guys in Manchester.
[Reply]
Johnny,
Randy Jones is a defenseman..
[Reply]
AK47,
Let him have his opinion and you have yours!
[Reply]
AK47,
I know Jones is a d-man…a 7th d-man.
[Reply]
Lou – I don’t think it’s a “majority” at all. It’s just a very ‘repetitive minority’. If I’m not mistaken, most of us are enjoying this team and season so far, along with you.
Marc – Keep those zingers coming! You make me laugh friend!
[Reply]
AK47,
I said that cause Ivanans only plays 5-10min a game and his job is to hit and fight when needed. why keep him when we have jones who will play 5-10min to hit and gith when needed. what do u think about the 4th line looking something like this
Lewis/Purcell Richardson Harrold??
[Reply]
Johnny,
Jones doesn’t fight, nor does he hit often
[Reply]
Jones is supposed to be quite a chippy player and a loose cannon, isn’t he?
[Reply]
Johhny,
Quit while you’re ahead.
Love,
Raitis Ivanans
[Reply]
Khanon,
Jones hits hard, and only fights when a teammate gets a cheap shot. ive seen too many times. im in the east coast so i got to see lots of philly games
[Reply]
Lanny McDonald’s ‘Stache,
Let him have his opinion and you have yours
Love Randy Jonesy
[Reply]
This is a good pickup by the Kings. Can’t argue with the price and the asset management. Though you can certainly argue with the asset management of the Flyers. They were trying to call him up to use him, not get rid of him. Now they are up against the cap wall and financially crippled for the remainder of the season. Just a horrible decision on their part.
[Reply]
Lou,
AGREED! I’m really enjoying the team this year. I love their chemistry, their effort, their attitudes. It’s all in the right place and we can’t rightfully expect perfection of them. It’s the Kings. (no offense) They’re moving in the right direction and that’s all the fans can really ask for.
[Reply]
does anyone know why Philly was calling him up?
[Reply]
Johnny,
Thanks for the laughs! You won’t hear the helicopters when they come in whisper mode for you.
[Reply]
Lanny McDonald’s ‘Stache
Thanks for the laughs aswell dude. now shave ur stache and go blog it up in the galgary flames barn yard
[Reply]
Johnny,
I looked him up via hockeyfights.com and he only has one nhl fight in his career, and three ahl fights
[Reply]
they wont post every single fight a player is in. only the memorable ones. like the one with maple leafs lol
[Reply]
I’m just hoping Marc Nathan doesn’t have video evidence of his glove remark.
[Reply]
Ah-ha! That’s the Philly conspiracy!
Lombardi and Murray, pissed off that they were only used as scouts (and asst coach) by the Flyers, are exacting revenge on their old team by extracting their best assets! Brilliant!
[Reply]
Cynic,
LOL! as was Nathan’s initial liner.
[Reply]
Randy Jones is somewhat of a fighter hes the one who brings it on when standing up for a teammate.
[Reply]
Johnny, our 4th line would look better with Clune on it.. I want them to send Lewis back to Manchester..
Clune/Ivanans/Lewis-Richardson-Harrold
[Reply]
Agreed, AK. And we need the middleweight. It’s a rare man that is not afraid to fight Ivan.
[Reply]
Anybody know the deal with Clune? Rich do you have info about the Clune situation?
[Reply]
Yeah….Gauthier part deux.
Our D is fine, we don’t need another Philly dummy to ruin the vibe.
[Reply]
randy jones is no denis gauthier,he skates well and despite having a suspension for a hit on his record is not really a big hitter but he has been pretty clutch on occasion. You guys have nothing to worry about its not like you gave up anything to get this guy.And as for the conspiracy you guys are crazy, you actually have a watchable team that wins games! when was the last time that happened!
i cant lie i was happy to see this guy not on the opening day roster but he really isnt that bad …
[Reply]
I sincerely hope he isn’t another Gauthier because I know of a few posters who would run him out on a rail even before he steps on the ice.
[Reply]
Good addition for our playoff run.
[Reply]
Kingston…Philly was calling him up to be their 7th d-man, and because their defense has more holes in it than swiss cheese.
[Reply]
Did someone just say our D is fine? Now, I’m really confused. How the hell did it get that way?
[Reply]
WWAMD,
Are you and anthony the same person?
[Reply]
Oh no! Another Philly boy. WWAMD, Khanon and Anthonyy are going to love this
[Reply]
mr.brett7-
Phi Defense- 3.00 goals against/game (t-16th), 28.4 shots against/game (6th best in league)
Kings Defense- 3.00 goals against/game (t-16th), 28.1 shots against/game (5th best in league)
Seems to me more like the goalies are the cheese…
[Reply]
To: ChachiaSinclair and the Automatics
You obviously don’t follow hockey enough or your team enough bud. Quincey was a great player we picked up for a season and used him to get Ryan Smyth from Colorado. I was personally sad to see him leave as his slick puck moving skills and ability on the power play has been missed but of course seeing how Ryan Smyth is playing kinda makes up for it. And sure his shots never got through enough but at least he would shoot and create chances and was young and talented.
And to all the fans who keep complaining about our team when it hasn’t looked so good since 2002 or even the Demitra era, cut the L.A coaching and managing departments some slack for now.
DL picked up Jack Johnson, Scuderi, Smyth, Quincey, Ellis, Greene, Stoll, Richardson and O’donnel PLUS has signed a number of players to good extensions AND drafted really well for more talent. Everyone had thier doubts about Ryan Smyth and so far he fits with the team so maybe Jones isn’t a great #1 d’man or a offensive defensemen like Green on Washington, mot many players are but I have a feeling we will see an improvement on our D and more grit to our game.
Jones will impress.
[Reply]
I think its a great depth pickup, with injury situations that may arrive, picking him up sooner rather than when there scrounging around looking to fill injury gaps later, this teams on its way, this will finally be a serious push this year!
[Reply]
Great post, Christopher.
[Reply]
Chris from Canada-
He was being sarcastic. Also, are you in L.A. for Canadian night?
[Reply]
JJ4PRES-
I’d love the Kings to get Marleau! This guy is a stud! AND can play C or LW.
[Reply]
Just because Jones injured Bergeron does not mean he is a tough guy.
He is a puck mover, he is not a Gauthier type. Jones is prone to defensive lapses so he would need to be paired with a stay-at-home.
When Jones plays, you are likely to see him get power play time, seeing as the Kings currently have to over-use forwards rather than defensemen on the points.
[Reply]
When is Hickey or Teubert going to be ready?
All this talk of depth and we’re signing Philly’s 7th defenseman?
We’re more in need of a Fran Kaberle type than another pylon.
[Reply]
Cristobal, the Kings have been snooping around for an inexpensive spare veteran defenseman (preferably puck moving like Jones) for months.
This is neither a surprise nor a bad move, as the job opening was quite clearly available.
Having to resort to putting Martinez in the opening night lineup should have made a move like this crystal clear to everyone on this board.
Hickey, for one, definitely needs more seasoning, by evidence that he has already been a healthy scratch down at Manchester…
[Reply]
Perhaps it can help for the competitiveness of the team as well, on offense, if you start to slack, we have forwards waiting to replace you, on defense, not so much…with Jones as the 7th, we get a veteran that can split time with OD and push the other defenseman…just another angle. We’ll see how he plays and that will do the talking
As for Philly not liking him, it seems easy to be disliked in Philly, even if you’re Santa Claus.
[Reply]
Jones is a puckmover?
If so, that’s a decent move.
Don’t know the player at all, however, and my question is for the DL depth-department to answer as they’ve been touting our depth and penciling in Hickey for 2 years.
But, I like Voinov and like to seem him given a shot. Really, however, I think Harrold should be playing D with his offensive ability back there. We sure need it.
[Reply]
Hey anthony -
Thanks for your great insight again. I remember the last d-man we picked up off waivers you called a scrub (yes, you used that exact same word)…Kyle Quincey. Boy I hope you’re right again…lol.
[Reply]
Oh I apologize then I didn’t know he was being sarcastic…when I read it, it didn’t seem that way but anyway I am sorry and no I live in Canada and follow the Kings as my favorite hockey team, weird I know but I’m not blind so I don’t follow the Leafs LOL! And I live in the same city Drew Doughty came from fyi!
Here’s hoping L.A can pull off a big big win against Vancouver tonite.
GO KINGS!
[Reply]
Good depth move. As EJ Radik said today , many teams have good relationships with other teams and make good trading partners, ala King/Philly. This is nothing new and for some reasons, certain posters get all bent out of shape using words like “conspiracy…obsession… spooky” when dealing with Philly. Get over it, because there will be more trades with them in the future…count on it.
[Reply]
Don’t mind the brawn or the depth
[Reply]
