Kopitar named `first star'

The NHL named Anze Kopitar as its “First Star of the Week” after a four-game stretch in which he totaled six goals and three assists, including his first career hat trick. Michael Cammalleri was the second star and Patrick Marleau was the third star.

The contract kicks in and so does the level of play, you rarely see that in sports these days. The rich get richer and, usually, lazier. Way to earn your bank Anze!

Well deserved honor for Kopi and, at this rate, not the last of the accolades coming his way this year…..

    Congrats to Anze!!!

last year a dearth of goals….
this year a plethora of goals…

    so what gives?

I think the secret weapon [not so secret really]
is the addition of Ryan Smyth, who creates scoring
opportunities with his great drive to the net
and his tenacious hounding of the puck, especially
    behind the opposition goal….

I love the fact that Anze really takes it personally to earn his keep and constantly evolve. I think it is what makes him alternate captain material. What I really hope is now he truly understands the benefits of working out and staying in shape with the results he’s having. Between that and Smyth’s influence, Anze’s natural talent could eclipse Ovechkin this year, at least that is what I am hoping for. :-)

    RICH…

i few weeks ago, you had started to answer about half of the open forum questions, but never got to the other half…

this is not a complaint…i completely understand that you have to prioritize and obviously, providing us with amazing stories and updates, has outweighed this…

but i was wondering if you plan on answering them or should we just wait to re-ask them again when you have another open forum…?

thanks for all that you do for us…!

You know what I love about this? I watch NHL on the FLY and they’re talking about the Kings, go to TSN.com…talking about the Kings, NHL Live on the radio…you guessed it, talking Kings. ESPN.com…ranked 4th in the power rankings.

    Viva la revolution!

p.s. kudos to DL for straight up calling out Anze at the end of last year. Probably the best move he’s made as GM. He provoked a sleeping giant.

It’s one thing for Kopitar to be having such an awesome season so far, in 12 games. Aside from the fact that he leads the league in goals and points, as Kings fans, it’s so great to see our stars being recognized league-wide.

East-coast people don’t see a lot of Kings, Ducks, Sharks, or Canucks games live. And in the past few years, all of those except the Kings have been competitive and contenders. It feels good to know that as a team, we’re developing to a point where we are starting to get noticed.

    Congrats, Kopi!!

Not surprised by the choice of Anzi the Amazin!
What does surprise/frustrate me is the exclusion of Frolov as one of the 3 stars in the game against Columbus. This seemed to happen quite a bit last year as well. From the past two seasons I’ve seen that Fro’s demeanor has put him deep into the dog house of not only the coach and management, but now the media looks to be on board as well. It disappoints me to see that a humble, shy, character isn’t commended in the NHL, look at his numbers, he produces! Where as other sports-ie. David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Troy Palomalu, Marvin Harrison, Barry Sanders, Orel Hershiser, they’re heralded for their quiet leadership. One thing I love most about hockey is the absence of individual ego. Just because someone’s quiet, doesn’t mean they dont care, doesn’t mean they don’t work hard, doesn’t mean they aren’t passionate…they just show it differently

Don’t look now but Fro is averaging 1pt per game. TSN has the Kings ranked 16 with Phoenix (3) and Dallas (6) teams we beat this week well ahead of us. Go figure.

I don’t think it’s any coincidence that Anze is getting a lot of love right after a long East Coast swing. All those “experts” finally got a chance to see the Kings play live and I think it made am impression. . .especially the Ranger game (despite the loss). NHL.com has three separate stories on their front page this morning about or featuring Kopitar. Also, the Sharks going 4-2 back East and the Yotes playing well is putting spotlight on the Pacific in general. It’s nice to finally be getting some positive pub out West!!!

FRO has 11 pts….Crosby has 11pts and Kovulchuk has 10 pts.

Yet Fro is never good enough

  23. WWAMD says:

    Also FUN FACT

As of now LA’s has 3 LW’s that are all on the TOP 10 LW’s in scoring in the NHL right now. Brown, Smyth and Frolov.

So we DON’T NEED another scoring LW as of now.

RW and C needs a little help! Man Gabby would have been nice this offseason!

    Way to go Kopi.
I always thought this is the type of player he could be after watching him as a rookie.
Kudos to TM for teaching him defensive responsibility. I can’t think of a better two way forward in the league right now.

It’s an awesome feeling thinking your team should beat the other team no matter.
Does anyone think we shouldn’t beat SJ even on the road?

  26. Cristobal says:

People mocked and insulted me last year when I said Kopi is on the level with the top 3 players in the league.
He’s actually, possibly, the most well rounded player in the top 3 of the league (and humble, too).
The addition of Smyth has finally given him the veteran with experience to help him realize his potential.
Of course, Smyth came here to play beside him because he recognized how talented Kopi is.

Add Fro to that line and they’ll be unstoppable like Deadmarsh, Allison, and Palffy were. Cammy would have loved playing with Kopi/Smyth.

i am no way shape or form a fro hater…i have his jersey…

and almost all my comments are in support of him…

so i don’t know where you get the idea calling me out on something i’ve never said or feelings i’ve never expressed is something of a mystery…

if you go back to rich’s player evaluations at the end of last year, i posted a comprehensive argument as to why d.l. needs to re-sign fro…

i think you stand corrected, sir…

  28. Steve McQueen says:

Cristobal, the only way Frolov see the top line is from the bench waiting for his next shift. We need secondary scoring, so putting Fro along with the other 2 takes away from the teams ability to have a second or third line that can score.

    WWAMD -

Why do you think he has 6 points in the last 3 games? Oh yea, because that coach you keep saying needs to be fired scratched him for a game and sent him a message that he’d better pick up his play. You better call Murray and thank him.

  32. PakiFro says:

    Steve McQueen–

Neither did frolov. He’s never been benched before yet he’s always been considered an “enigma”. But then he always came around and had his hot streaks. Makes no sense.

Murray just over reacted. It was the most glaring mistake made by the team during the three game losing streak and Frolov took one (unfairly) for the whole team’s lack of “caring”.

  33. Barrie G says:

    This is awesome. LOL

A thread giving props to our franchise player for an honor from the NHL is turning into a pissing match about Frolov.

  34. WWAMD says:

    No tantrum4,

Remember when the coach I think should be fired made the annoucement to move Fro to 2nd line. I instantly praised him. However, I’ve been stating OVER AND OVER again how he should be on the top line and THATS why he’s had success lately. Hmmmmm, chalk one up for me!

Of the King’s 41 years of existence, I have been an avid fan for at least 35 of those. The Kings as an expansion team was placed in the Prince-of-Wales division which also included Montreal, who automatically had their pick of any Canadian born player (before the draft). In spite of that, the Kings had some good and some great teams (even before Gretzsky). Can you say “Triple Crown Line?”.
With that said, the present Kings are on a fast track.
Kopi=143pts, Smythe=102pts, Fro, Brown, Williams, a point per game. Isn’t it nice to once again dream? GO KINGS. By the way, look for the band-wagon to roll in.
