For Brown to hold off that shot until the final tenths of a second shows amazing game-awareness, and the kind of team play I wish you saw more of in professional sports. Hats off to the Captain.
[Reply]
Great win for us, like Foxy said – 2nd and 3rd were FANTASTIC.
[Reply]
Anze kopitar now leads the nhl in scoring, kings are for real this season, i cant wait to come home from colorado and watch some games!
[Reply]
i know plus minus doenst tell the whole story but Johnson at a minus 7 this early in the season is not good..it needs to be addressed..Could you imagine if Fro had those numbers… Other than that the Kings played GREAT!!!!
[Reply]
What do you guys think about leaving simms on the 1st line and putting williams with stoll and purcell?
[Reply]
Nice win against a pretty hot team on the road, boys!
[Reply]
oh simms looks good on that line but so does JW tough call for the coah
[Reply]
A very nice win and certainly takes the sting away from our opening night disaster. Thought everyone played a very solid game. Simmonds was a beast, Kopitar a stud as always, Stoll had a solid game on both ends and I especially liked what I saw out of Parse.
Nice work Kings.
[Reply]
simmer was great…the best player on the ice by a mile…
and the friggin’ colorado avalanche just beat detroit again…wowowowowowow…!!!!!!!!
great road win for us…strong overall effort sans the weak third period goal by the yotes (awful play by quick…talk about lazy…?…equal wow…!)…
[Reply]
Scott Parse, good game. Keep up the good work.
[Reply]
RENO…
i said on a previous thread tonight…”uhh…jw…welcome to the third line…”
and i still mean that, babe…
t.m will prob put back jw on the first but i wouldn’t…
[Reply]
I wrote this under another post but since RenoKingsFan brought it up, I don’t know about leaving Simmer on the top unit. He has played great the last 2 games though so we’ll have to see. I think that when Willie comes back Parse needs to stay and Purcell needs to go back to Manchester. Parse looked tonight, I know its 1 game but Parse looked better tonight than Purcell has looked all year
[Reply]
Woot Kings Win !!!!!1 Keep it up boys GO KINGS GO
[Reply]
actually i don’t blame Quick for the 3rd period goal… just like Foxy said, either you get it or you don’t with a poke check…I won’t second guess that. And while looking at the play after-the-fact and seeing that Doan really wasn’t able to get a shot makes the poke check a less ideal move – but in the midst of the play that wasn’t so clear.
I think it’s a solid road win against a good team that has given us fits over the past 2yrs
[Reply]
Look who’s in 1st in the Pacific, and 1nd in the Conference.
I know it’s only been 11 games, but this doesn’t happen often.
Detroit lost again.
Colorado won again. (18 points, only team ahead of us)
Time to go watch the Ducks hopefully lose.
See you loyal Kings fans tomorrow.
[Reply]
Yeah in hindsight the play by Quick on the 3rd goal probable shouldn’t have happened, but he took a gamble and it didn’t pay off. On the flip side if he had made the poke check everyone on here would be lining up to praise him for such a bold heads up play.
[Reply]
I think Lewis will be sent back down before purcell
[Reply]
I have a confession to make (keeping in mind that being on the east coast I only heard the game on xm). Before the season started I really wondered if Kopi could step it up and become a real 1st line center. I wasn’t convinced. Yet I felt sure that Quick would build on last year based on games I Had seen and become the lock down 1st goalie.
It’s working out almost the opposite. W every game I’m more convinced than ever by Kopi, yet from what you guys are saying there are more of these questionable goals by Quicker. Hmmm. He’s still only early in his 2nd year, but it would be very helpful to all if he could start cleaning up some of the less convincing goals.
[Reply]
was a damn good game still got me nervous any time Shane touched that damn puck…
[Reply]
Re: Simmonds staying on 1st line.
I can tell you this- the guy skates better than most Kings, especially Williams.
His Stop/Go acceleration is amazing.
Simmonds will be at a standstill, and still beat 2 defenders, he even is powerful enough to split through Defenses.
He is creative with the puck too.
He will be to hockey what Jackie Robinson was to baseball.
Ok, that last part was a lie.
[Reply]
Just read some of the threads above mine that weren’t there when I was writing mine. So evidently last PHX goal wasn’t as bad as it sounded then?
[Reply]
by the way, how good was Brownie today? he was just awesome i thought. even if he didn’t score a single point tonight, i would still say the same thing….plus on his first goal from Kopi while it was a beautiful pass, the angle on his shot was certainly no gimme. Real quality finish
Also maybe this game makes the Stoll haters shutup for a lil while (although i don’t know the faceoff percentages yet)
[Reply]
I don’t think that was a lazy play by Quick, just…pokecheck fail. He’s pulled it off before, not this time. Doan really has our number, though, just like Smyth before we got him. Can we make a trade to neutralize the threat? J/K.
We were scrambling a lot out there. But heck yeah, Kopi is top scorer in the league! Plus, I love seeing Simmonds celebrate after a goal. Do the pumper-simmy?
[Reply]
im EXTREMELY EXTREMELY happy DL called KOPI up when he did about him needing to be in better shape and jsut better overall for the team to move to the next level..im happy he listened because now all his hard work is paying dividends WOW GO KINGS GO!!!
[Reply]
Way to send the dogs back down to earth! Big game from Kopi again. Congrats to Scott Parse as well…
[Reply]
Interviews! =D Please get Dean’s thoughts on the NHL’s new scoring leader if you can Rich. Woot! This was a huge win for us! GO KINGS!
[Reply]
variable, I think Murray just might do it though. He has said that he’s looking to get more secondery scoring, so putting Williams on that line might be good for both lines.
[Reply]
I don’t care what his plus/minus is, Jack Johnson is the Kings best defensemen this season BY FAR.
[Reply]
I thought Quick played really well the whole game. Think about the fact that the shots on goal were 24-12 in favor of the Coyotes after the second period…
On the subject of Simmers: I don’t have a problem with him staying on the first line. He’s all effort, I just wish he’d stop being a puck hog. He needs to learn when to go PS3 and when to pass off the puck.
Overall though, great revenge win. My wife and I were in our seats for the opener, and it was a bitter pill to swallow. The Kings have come a long way since that first game.
[Reply]
@Quattro
I think you spelled Doughty wrong.
Seriously though, how can you not think Doughty is the best defensemen this season?
[Reply]
quacks are losing 4-2, kings win is way more exciting and important but seeing the ducks stink it up so far this season is also pretty bomb.
[Reply]
I agree with nell, -7 for johnson is not cutting it, seems like every time they score #3 skates by the net.
[Reply]
And the Quacks are down 4-2
[Reply]
FIFY. Jack Johnson is the Kings worst defender by far. Goals against at even strength this year, updated total.
Drewiske 0
Greene 3
O’Donnell 4
Doughty 6
Scuderi 11
Johnson 15
You can blame it on the goalie, on karma, on the coach, on anything you want, but the numbers continue to pile up on Johnson like a freight train. He is the worst defender in the entire NHL statistically at even strength. Let the excuses begin!
[Reply]
Good game boys!
On to tomorrow!
[Reply]
Not only are the Kings in first, Kopitar is all alone leading the NHL in points! 2 points over Ovechkin. I’m pretty sure this is the kind of player we were waiting Kopitar to be, thankfully the time is now!
[Reply]
If I were TM I would start trying to make the 4th line our “stopper line” and make all 3 top lines into scoring threats.
Maybe it cant be done but that kid Parse might be a pleasant surprise.
[Reply]
There is NO WAY Williams isn’t back on the top line when he gets back. Yes Simmonds has played well on that line, but the line was also on fire with Williams and you don’t take a guy off the #1 line because he got hurt. I think the line should look something like this:
Smyth/Kopitar/Williams
Frolov/Zeus/Brown
Parse/Stoll/Simmonds
Purcell/Richardson/Harrold
Ivanans
With regards to JJ being a minus 8, you guys have to remember that he plays opposite the other teams’ top lines every single night for most of the game. Obviously he’s going to have a lower +/- then say a guy like Greene, who usually plays against the other teams checking line, who will not score as many goals as the first line over a full season.
But anyway, great win and great streak! Keep it going tomorrow!
[Reply]
yeah, Regulate, if only Modry was available we could just get rid of JJ.
[Reply]
15 goals against for Johnson..out of how many?? Maybe he should be made into a forward…
[Reply]
trying to figure out what to do with Simmonds/ Williams is a great problem to have!!!!
[Reply]
I like the way that “3rd” line sounds. Parse-Stoll-Simmer have promise. Not a lot of grit, although that’s a problem top to bottom, but Simmer has dropped the gloves in the past. I know it’s a stretch but he could grow into another Iginla
[Reply]
agreed
[Reply]
Regulalte… I just read your thread about JJ and goals against at even strength. It didn’t at all dawn on me… then I looked again.. Drewiske 0 (as in none?). Wow. I liked that guy from the first games I saw him play last year…. but really. I don’t think Nicklas Lindstrom can even say that (not that I’m comparing) but that’s a pretty impressive stat even if it clearly doesn’t just count on him. I guess the 15 for JJ doesn’t look wonderful at this point. That’s more than one a game till now w/o mention of PP goals against.
[Reply]
Phoenix must have a Doughty voodoo doll – he was a turnover machine tonight!
[Reply]
Given the way the Red Wings have been playing, I wouldnt be surprised if Lids goals against numbers were way up this year
[Reply]
Darrell….
That was good….
Now the Kings have a great ploy for combat in the LA Sports PR Wars. Next Manny Bubblehead night at Dodger Stadium the Kings can give out Drew Doughty voodoo ‘antidote’ dolls.
Hey, how’s that sound?
[Reply]
Great game tonight. Much better 3rd period than last game. Tomorrow’s gonna be a tough test. Hopefully Mason doesn’t play in a back to back. Either way, I like our chances of getting some payback.
[Reply]
number 6
Why wait? We need those for the next game vs the Yotes
[Reply]
just saw the game summary on espn.com….attendance was a shade under 8,000 (45% of capacity). ouch.
Ladies and gentlemen, how about a nice warm round of applause for your Quebec/KC/Hamilton Coyotes.
[Reply]
Better yet they should pass out Doan Voodoo dolls the next time they’re in LA
[Reply]
I vote Quebec
[Reply]
Quicker wins tomorrow, he’s tied with Fleury and Anderson for wins. Might not be pretty, but efective!
[Reply]
8000 fans?wow ouch too bad cuz their team is playing good. imagine if they sucked
[Reply]
Parse played better then Purcell
Awesome 3rd period
[Reply]
Good win tonight, hopefully the voodoo Phoenix curse is broken. Someone asked out of how many goals against even strength as a team. The Kings have allowed 22 even strength and/or short handed goals against this season through tonight. Of the 22, Johnson has been on the ice for 15 of them. You do the math. Let’s hear why?
I want Johnson to do well, but he has picked up where he left off last year. He is a lot of flash, makes some really nice plays, but when it comes down to getting the job done on a consistent basis, he is failing, in fact like I mentioned, is statistically the worst defensemen in the NHL. I know stats aren’t everything, but the halo effect you guys have without looking at results of what ACTUALLY IS HAPPENING, is myopic at best. 2 goals tonight against at even strength, and of course, Johnson is on the ice for both of them. Yes, they are not all his fault, but he needs to take a lesson from Drewiske, Greene and O’Donnell on how to play defense, cause right now, it ain’t happening.
[Reply]
Maybe Aki Berg is available
[Reply]
Would they be considered a dead team skating, or a lame duck franchise?
[Reply]
Supersonic…. glad to see others have drole sense of humor around here.

You must have missed my last post. Here it is again for you:
With regards to JJ being a minus 8, you guys have to remember that he plays opposite the other teams’ top lines every single night for most of the game. Obviously he’s going to have a lower +/- then say a guy like Greene, who usually plays against the other teams checking line, who will not score as many goals as the first line over a full season.
[Reply]
jesus enough of this JJ crap he is good dman period…he is NOT the only player on the nice when those goals are scored……there are other 5 players on the ice as well….again as someone mentioned it earlier he is out against the top lines in most occasions….
[Reply]
Was at the game in Phoenix tonight. The Kings were outplayed for the most part. Great to pick up the two points, thanks to Jonathon Quick!
Brown and Kopitar were also good. Simmonds played hard every shift and some nice skill shown by Purcell on the power play was appreciated. Parse looked good for what little time he had the puck and Richardson and Harold were surprisingly effective. On defense Greene, O’Donnel, and Drewiske were for the most part solid.
Doughty was terrible for the the first half of the game and JJ was horrible all night. Both look like they needed a vacation in Manchester. What is up with JJ?
Saw some fellow Kings fans at the game and it was a small and somber Coyote crowd who slipped into the desert night.
[Reply]
JJ has great skills. But the name of the game is put the biscuit in the basket as they say. If that’s happening too much Against when he’s on the ice then he might do well to simplify. Drewiske isn’t a magical skater, nor does he have amazing moves or a blistering shot… but when I saw him play only one or two games I remember thinking, ‘yikes, that guy seems to be so poised, and it seems he’s always making the right play’. SIMPLIFY.
[Reply]
I still believe Jack is going to be a monster d-man. The kind of defenseman that can take over a game potentialy. The question is do you live with his mistakes and questionable defense until he gets to that point. I gotta say yea for now, because the reward will be well worth it in the end.
[Reply]
number6 -
Here’s a stat for you from tonight’s game:
Jack Johnson time on ice 21:57
Davis Drewiske time on ice 15:22
Matt Green time on ice 14:36
Rob Scuderi time on ice 16:58
Hmmmm…you think this might be part of the reason Johnson is on for more goals against than those other guys when he averages anywhere from 5 to 10 more minutes per game than them?
Wow it just amazes me that even after a win some people still want to come on here and complain about SOMETHING…
[Reply]
What a game, HUGE Game tomorrow!
[Reply]
Not complaining about Johnson in my previous comment. Just pointing out for this team to win talented players like JJ and Doughty have to play better. Johnson and Frolov are not fitting into this team for whatever reason. Doughty has been really struggling. It may be the system or the coaching. Leaving Frolov aside for the moment one thing is clear and that is as a defensman you can not make bad decisions or bad passes as often as it’s been happening with those talented young D-men. Reading about Hickey being a healthy scratch in Manchester tonight makes me start to wonder if puck moving defenseman can prosper in the organizational defensive systems currently being employed?
[Reply]
No mention of Ivanans actually DRAWING a penalty tonight?!? When I saw that, I knew the KIngs would win.
[Reply]
Can we get Shane Doan and Steve Ott at the deadline this year?
I vote Las Vegas Coyotes.
[Reply]
Except we are talking about even strength, so your post is irrelevant to the actual discussion. Looks like Murray is finally seeing the same thing. First time this season that I am aware of that the Scuderi/Johnson tandem was LAST in even strength time. Tonight’s time.
Time on ice at even strength.
O’Donnell 15:45
Doughty 15:31
Drewiske 14:34
Greene 13:32
Scuderi 12:43
Johnson 12:29
[Reply]
2nd in the Conference so deep into the season…must be a franchise reecord. Mazel tov, boys!
[Reply]
wow, excellent third period. Almost collapsed there on the doan goal but held it together. Great win.
[Reply]
there’s a Kings fan in Montreal??
wOw!
there may be 2 or 3 if they keep playing this well…
[Reply]
Quick needs to pick up his game if we are going to make the playoffs.
[Reply]
I’m surprised that Scuderi hasn’t received the bashing that JJ has. I was at the Dallas game and after watching this game, it appears that he is letting the play come to him instead of attacking like he is known for. Let’s hope they can get things under control in the next few games. Otherwise, it’s time to split them up.
[Reply]
I remember when the Kings got Grant Fuhr. We thought “Great! Now we won’t lose to him and we’ll torture OTHER teams!” Didn’t quite work out that way
Didn’t with Fiset either.
[Reply]
For those worried about JJ’s stats, how about Scuds? He was supposed to be the “real deal.” Literally, “the piece,” or so I’m told. So far, he’s not delivering. I’m a lot more worried about that than some blip in JJ’s maturity curve!
[Reply]
Tip of the hat to Grinder17…I was reading while you were typing, I guess!
[Reply]
Doan is to Phoenix vs. the Kings what Cheechoo used to be. King Killers.
Great game by the boys tonight. It’s good to see Stoll and Brown get some. Best game I’ve seen Simmonds play yet, but no he’s not the BEST player on the ice. Lets not get crazy here.
Defense needs to toughen up a bit. I don’t think JMFJ is playing horribly but while pointing out that Quick made the all or nothing play on Doan’s goal, it was JMFJ that was behind his man because Doan was basically on a breakaway. Play a little smarter Jack. I love you though! (In a totally hetero love way).
Kopi is a BEAST. What a great play to Brown (and yes in the NHL that’s a gimme goal). Simmonds took a nice skate to stick move but that’s a gimme too. BUT they have to be in the right place to get those and they both were.
2 more points. Keep up the positives, lose some of the negatives, and this team gets better all season!
[Reply]
Reculate:
Johnson hasn`t got Blake out of his system yet!
[Reply]
Does anyone else think we’re incredibly lucky to have escaped with a win last night. We continue to turn the puck over in our own zone by trying to make lateral and/or cross-ice passes in traffic. Several player did this last night leading to scoring chances just like Phoenix had in our home opener. We just got lucky that they didn’t capitalize and that Quick played better this time. On O, much better, better forecheck, better intensity, but on D, we’ve got to get better still. Make the safe simple play up the boards and out of the zone unless you are 100%POSITIVE you can make the lateral pass. Quick still looks like he’s playing “small” to me and I’d like to see him stay on his feet/knees more and shuffle instead of sprawling and diving on Doan’s 1st goal.
A win is a win and we’re dominating with puck control at times, but there’s a long way to go still.
[Reply]
Correction, I meant Vrbata’s goal in regard to Quick staying on his feet/knees and shuffling.
[Reply]
JMFJ the defenseman in the league, extreme view….not playing up to the level we were hoping, true…it could be he needs to find his groove, could be a chemistry issue with Scuds, but he’ll get through it.
As for using plus/minus as some sort of reading on a defenseman, if you believe in it that much, then the Kings made an amazing signing two seasons ago, they signed the defenseman tied for first in the NHL with a +40, he was tied with the soon to be hall of famer, Nicklas Lidstrom…we all know how Tom Preissing worked out, didn’t we…plus/minus is worthless.
[Reply]
meant “worst defenseman” in that first part
[Reply]
How about a hats off to the coaching staff for their adjustments they made between the 2nd and 3rd periods. The team was horrible in the 2nd at getting the puck out of the defensive zone. The coaching staff got them focused and communicating and we end up with 2 points. Murray and pals have had some iffy moments this year but tonight their adjustments were huge in getting us the win. The timeout call before the 5 on 3 to get our top unit rest was also solid and ended up in a goal.
[Reply]
