FINAL: Wings 5, Kings 2

Brian Rafalski scored an empty-net goal with 6.8 seconds left to ice it. Quotes from the locker room when I can…

This team needs to start beating Detroit, 22 to the last 24 won by Detriot is pathetic

That was flat out pathetic. that game was frustrating to watch, in a bad way.

    Not a hater, bro…

Kings are playing 5th game in 8 days, 6th game in 10 days, sound tired/radio only (lots of turnovers, trailing penalties), they’ve stopped scoring…

Playoff teams need more. The Kings have lost 22 of 24 against Detroit, and they’ve only scored two goals in 4 straight games.

I’m selfish. I want more from this team.

Tired team. That performance blew the smelliest of cheeses.

It was a good game till the officiating became a bit suspect. Where was the call on the Knee on Knee hit to Kopi. And what hold?!?!?! Stoll’s stick was being held by that P.O.S. Wings player and he got spun around. I think if the officials were a bit more observant this game would have been better.

    [Reply]

  8. FaninHighland says:

It didn’t help that the Kings didn’t get a call all night. Kopitar gets tripped no call. And I think it was Jaret Stoll being called for holding, the guy grabbed his stick. I normally don’t have a hard time with the officiating but this was really bad.

This team is NOT going to make it to the playoffs if they dont start winning games against quality teams like the rangers and detroit. I still dont believe in this team until they prove the can win against the best. Kings organization does to much talk and no show.

  10. WWAMD says:

Neil Goaltending had nothing to do with it. Look at Osgood, another night off for him. The Kings coaching is bi-polar. Last year it was all about the “D” now its the “O”. We were winning FO’s and blocking shots…What happened, did everyone forget how to do it in the summer? Murray doesn’t let things gel. I’m surprised the lines are still the same. What this team needs is Patrick O’Sullivan…plan and simple…He would of won this game for us!

Well hopefully we can finish this road trip strong, Wings will lose to the avs next game. We still have a winning record and this is the longest roadtrip of the year:) so if we even get out of this trip 500 we will be in great shape.

  12. Kevin says:

FaninHighland. I agree. That was some bad officiating. That was more of a Knee on Knee hit on Kopi. The Wing was holding Stoll’s stick in his arm.

We just have to bounce back against Columbus. Tonight’s game was huge in my opinion, this was a statement game. 2nd game of a back-to-back, playing against the Red Wings. If we win this game, we send a message to the whole league, but once again, we fail…

Ah another typical Los Angeles Kings season, might as well call up Craig McTavish or something..

  22. OC Kings Since '77 says:

I agree FaninHighland, the officiating was terrible. Both of the calls against Smyth were horrible, and the Stoll call was even worse.

But, WWAMD, you are flat out wrong. We were not winning face-offs (at least not the crucial ones), as 2 of the Wings goals were a direct result of clean face-off losses by the Kings in the defensive zone. We must get better on face-offs if we want to be a playoff contender.

People on this blog are funny, we win 2 or 3 games and you guys are popping the corks and singing and danceing, we lose a game or 2 and you want to fire the coach and become a Ducks fan. Just think it is early on a younge team that is very, very good. Still have 2 games left on the trip and if we win one or both I think that makes for a good trip at 500 or a game over 500. Just chill…Damn.

  24. WWAMD says:

    Bako…

True Sully did have opportunities on the 4th line and dog house. Yet everytime he scored and killed penalties and made great defensive plays he was never phrased. Much like Frolov 2nite. He creates spaces and give beautiful passes for players like Simmonds to PUT away and they fan on it. Frolov is the man. I said it before that JJ is the man and will have a great year, all the while everyone wanted to trade him away for a bag of pucks…..Where are those people now? Sully is what this team needs, someone with heart and grit. Williams is a pylon out there that pucks hit and go in. He’s useless and INVISABLE on the first line.

So the officiating blew. We need to look forward to a hot Columbus team and just win. I am looking forward to a year where the Kings surprise everyone and go to the playoffs.

I was listening to Phil Espo on XM Radio today and he was praising the new look Kings. Let’s build from that and go further than we have in the last 10 years.

it’s because half the time we were shorthanded, so the penalty killers were on the ice.. the fatigue really caught up to us tonight and like i said in my earlier post, we just need to bounce back..

  32. BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy says:

To be angry in the face of a bad performance is NOT panic.

I don’t want to kick my dog! I type instead. In my head is the vision of a solid Kings team. That team has certain requirements. If my heart is in its hands, I’ve got the right to whine and moan when they throw in some stinkers.

True, it’s going to happen to all teams, slumps. But take in what just happened. At 10:00 am on Wednesday, the Kings slid into the New York spotlight with a four-game win streak and an excellent power rating. One bad performance followed another, and now all the hockey world is winking at each other behind our backs, nodding their heads:

Nothing has really changed in Los Angeles.

They can’t even come close against a weakened Wings team left with only Zetterberg on their top line.

Damn. I’m at work, and I can’t even kick my dog, can’t throw my drink at the TV, can’t scream at the kids. So I type with enough anger to stir the Devil himself.

    I’m entitled, that’s what I think!

How quickly some of you turn! Pretty funny.

Kings were tired and the results showed. Three games in four nights on the road. Come on, be a little realistic. They win three games, you’re euphoric; they lose two, you’re ready to write off the season! Talk about mood swings!

Kings played very well yesterday in NY but lost, played well in the first tonight, but tired legs and mental breakdowns led to penalties, and sloppy play as the game progressed.

Kopitar even looked like he was playing hurt. He must’ve tweaked his shoulder or back – wasn’t skating well in the third.

    [Reply]

  35. BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy says:

Kopitar got dumped on his shoulder, so said the Detroit announcers, don’t even know which one.

Tell you the truth, they made it sound heroic that Ko was still on the ice.

  36. Lexigirl says:

The Kings are playing back to back games against good teams. Quick was not stellar in tonight’s game, as much as everyone was down on Ersberg, that short side goal that Quick gave up doesn’t endear him either.

The refs made some extremely bad calls and non-calls. A couple of which definitely had a scoring effect on the game.

Bad penalties taken by the Kings, especially offensive zone penalties. I know they’re tired, but imagine how tired they will be come games 70-82.

Poor passing for most of the game, didn’t look like anyone’s heart was really in this one, unlike the STL and NYI games.

All in all, enough blame to go around, but the faceoffs have got to get better, and the penalty kill has got to get better. We could have tied or won if our Power Play was on point.

I still say this team is a contender, and it is way to early in the season to be as negative and nasty as some of these posts have been. But what do I know, I’m just a girl.

Other than that drewiskie is sick so is the top line the team is good it will happen!!! The key here is patience!!!! We all are kings fans, but the pathetic and frustrating part is that the quackers won there first championship before we did… and we have been in the league way damn longer then they have.. and been in rebuild mode from first day we entered the league. Every year, we get our hopes up to only find out that its just the same old kings!

  41. Cristobal says:

The officiating in this league is pure crap.

And, where was the GRIT tonight? Kopi got hammered twice and there were no responders. Doughty isn’t the only player we need to backup with some fisticuffs.

The fourth line played very well, but Frolov and Brown are floundering with their groups. One of them should replace Williams up top, or, Murray should play Brown and Fro together.

  42. Rookie says:

Lackluster effort not helped by the usual bias of the officials in favor of the Wings. Where was the fire and passion that was there during our 4 game win streak? Cleary should have had his a**s handed to him after that cheap shot on Kopi. They were on the ropes after the first period and we couldn’t finish. Deja vu of last year……

  43. JT Snow says:

The whole team played poorly. Refs did a bad job but that was not why we lost.
I’m sticking to my arguement against this stupid forwards on the Pt during the pp. Teams have picked up on it and are increasing their pressure and causing mistakes and the eventuality is going to be sh goals.
As it now stands, this current lineup will not make the playoffs. Brown should move with simmonds and Frolov up with Stoll. Purcell is versatile and can change wings if need be…
    On to Columbus

    [Reply]

  44. nykingfan says:

well said Lexigirl…you nailed it on all points.

Terrible officiating, but we took some brutal penalties. Smythe has been our best player, but not last night. He was terrible.

I didn’t like the diry hit on Kopitar, but everyone was thrilled with Ivanans being scratched. Does Cleary do that if Ivanans is on the bench? We’ll never know, but that’s the 1st thing I thought of.
Next time people look at other teams rosters and decide Ivanans is not needed on that night, remember dirty hits don’t only come from goons..they also come from chicken sh*** like Cleary.
btw I still saw next to nothing from Lewis.

Not impressed at all with the play of Quick. If this is what we’re going to see from our goalies on a nightly basis, it won’t be long until we see Bernier for good.

Time to puick it up and play a full 60 minute game against Columbus. As good as I thuink this team can be, it’s teams like Columbus that we’ll be battling for a playoff spot.

    [Reply]

  45. JT Snow says:

I don’t think Cleary’s hit on kopi had anything to do with Ivanans on the bench or not. He can certainly hold his own as he proved previously with Pronger..
I also agree on Lewis. AHL please as he isn’t a 4th liner… Bring on Clune
does anyone else feel the forwards on the pt on the pp is ridiculous and destined to hurt us? I think it is going to hurt us badly

    [Reply]

  46. nykingfan says:

    JT
You’re probably right, but we’ll never know. One thing is for sure…there was no retribution towards Cleary after the hit. Sometimes this team plays way too soft.
I loved the good old days when Brownie would plow a guy through the boards. He leads the team in hits but I can’t recall one “old style” Brownie hit.
I’d like to see Clune get back. His style of play (from what I hear)is exactly what is needed on the 4th line. That line needs a guy willing to throw the body every time the opposition has the puck. Nobody could stand Zeiler, but at least he made a pest of himself to the opposition. Lewis seems out of place on this team.

We don’t have another offensive defenseman to put on the point of the PP. We only have JJ and Doughty. I think when Hickey comes up, you’ll see that change.
Stoll is supposed to have one of the hardest shots in the league. I guess the arthritis has stolen some of the thunder from his shot.

  48. Dan H. says:

I’ve wondered why the past few seasons it seems imperative on the PP to have 4 forwards out there including one on the point. I think we have the personnel to have 2 guys on the point that are D men now and that shot is a big part of what they’re trying to do.
